5 Reasons I’m a Grandma…

by Her Happy Balance on June 18, 2013

At the ripe old age of 22, I am finding that I act either like a 5-year-old or an 85-year-old. So this post is going to be a rather random one with the top 5 reasons why I am secretly a grandma, enjoy 😉

Reason #1: I love watching game shows. In fact, if I could stay home from work and watch “Let’s Make a Deal” and “The Price is Right” everyday, I would do it. And as if two game shows could ever be enough, I’d make sure to watch “Wheel of Fortune,” or as we old ladies like to say “Wheel,” again at night. A jeopardy party would also happen too…

Reason #2: If I could, I would go to bed at 9pm every single night. I love my sleep, and I just do not function on anything less than 7 hours and even that is not ideal. I want 8 hours or more every night. Just give me my rollers and glass of warm milk and call me granny Les!

Reason #3: I have no problem with looking socially unacceptable (occasionally). If my feet hurt at work, I’m probably going to take off my shoes and walk around like an Asian tourist in flip-flops and socks. Bad fashion, don’t care. Sorry, not sorry.

Reason #4: If I could get away with wearing one of those clear plastic little hoods that grandma’s wear in the rain, I would. I absolutely hate getting my hair wet! Even though I don’t have a perm that I’m concerned about ruining, I still like to keep my tresses rain-free. I am not above wearing a hoodie and then pulling the drawstrings tightly until my face is a mere little circle inside a big sweatshirt. I will also employ the use of an umbrella on top of this. Rain and me are not friends.

Reason#5: My purse is not actually a purse, it is Mary Poppin’s bag full of EVERYTHING. You need batteries? In my purse. How about a calculator? In my purse. Birthday cake candles? In my purse. You get the idea…I am like a good girl scout, always prepared. My grandmother occasionally carries a banana in her bag, I need to get on her level.

She's so unassuming, but packs a punch in her carpet bag!

Thoughts??

In what ways are you like a grandma?

In what ways are you like a little kid?

Tell me I’m not the only person who really loves watching “Wheel”!

my sister calls me an old lady all of the time. apparently, I’m not cool anymore. oh well, i need my sleep!

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:45 am

Me too, Nicole, me too. Hence why I fall asleep at our game nights 🙂

Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl June 18, 2013 at 8:30 am

This seriously cracks me up!! Lately, I have been feeling like a grandma since I am ready for bed by about 10 and am almost always awake by 7 a.m….which is CRAZY for me!

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:46 am

Welcome to the grandma club, leave you cane and rain hood at the door! 😛

Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom June 18, 2013 at 8:55 am

I actually murder the game of Wheel of Fortune and whoever plays against me never stands a chance. It’s to the point where I would never win a lot of money because I always know the puzzles super early and the wheel knows when you’re getting greedy. I love going to bed early (during the week) and getting up early. I am a kid because I love Spongebob, all things fuzzy, and everything Disney. It’s a healthy balance 😉

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:47 am

I am convinced that you and I would be great IRL friends. We could have Wheel tournaments and drink beer and eat lots of food in sweats. Ya dig? haha

Meghan @ fitnesscrEATures June 18, 2013 at 9:23 am

omg you are officially hilarious. more so than before, i promise. hahaha i can’t handle your ridiculousness anymore. I am all about some Price is Right, circa Bob Barker. I can’t hang with new dude Drew Carey. Wheel – I love that show! I wish I watched it more (you know what I’ve chosen to do with my television time lately…haha). We are the same about sleep, which is one of the major concerns I had about our fakecation. I thought you wouldn’t be down with early bed times, but you’ve proven once more that we are truly bloggy bestys. 🙂 Phew!
You and those flip flop sock combinations will stay locked in your room while I’m visiting, you hear me? Haha! Totally touristy. Rocking it out, too!
Can I get some batteries from you? K, thanks. So nifty, seriously! This is why I’ll always keep you around!!
I’m like a grandma with my bed time, my social life and my hair (I dye it so much you’d think it’s because I was going grey. I am not.).
I’m like a kid with my hyperactivity, my inability to sit still, my extreme enthusiasm and my love, true, true TRUE love for candy. We are practically besties. Have a wonderful Tuesday love!!! < than 3 you so much!!!

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:51 am

First of all, I think our relationship just got taken to the next level. In my head, before I even responded to your comment, I thought “Oh Meggy bear” and smiled. LOL, that either makes me officially a creep or your BFFAE! 😀 And I am in agreement, Bob Barker was wayyy better than Drew, but I take what I can get. Plinko still needs to be played. And I will promise not to wear socks and flip flops on our fakecation. It’s an old photo of me during the winter when my feet just couldn’t take it anymore! Also, as long as you are not dying your hair blue (Old ladie’s apparently do that) then you are safe. And you will forever be gorgeous, blonde Meghan to meeee! And lastly, and this is important, what is your favorite candy ever?!

Beth @ Mangoes and Miles June 18, 2013 at 9:28 am

“If I could, I would go to bed at 9pm every single night.” -> YES! During the school year I actually managed to be in bed by 9:30pm every night. It’s pretty impressive, although all of my friends made fun of me. Now that I’m home for the summer, I’m not in bed quite as early just because I’m diddle dallying around. That needs to be fixed!

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:52 am

Girl, I am impressed! You must be a great time manager to get all of your studying and homework done before 9 each night. You go, girl, you go!

Chelsea @ LittleOneRuns June 18, 2013 at 10:12 am

I get called “grandma” by my brother lol. I am in bed by 9:30 and home everynight by about 8:30-9. 8 hours of sleep is NECESSARY for me too!

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:52 am

ME TOO. 8 Hours is completely 100% necessary, I am a crabby panda without!

Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness June 18, 2013 at 10:50 am

LOL omg i couldnt stop laughing during the purse catagory- i’m the exact same way!! I HAVE A BANANA IN THERE RIGHT NOW. i have a padlock, just in case i need to lock something, a mini flashlight in case im in the dark, etc etc. and i am thisssss close to getting one of those clear plastic head things for the rain. i love those.

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:53 am

PURSE SOULMATE. Seriously, I need to start shoving random fruit in there for snacks. At one time I DID have a padlock in mine too…it was for the gym though 🙂

Christine@ Apple of My Eye June 18, 2013 at 10:51 am

Haha I’m such a grandma as well! I have a monster of a purse that holds everything under the sun. I also get up ridiculously early and game shoes are the bomb diggity 😉

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:54 am

You are totally right, game shows ARE the bomb diggity 😉 And really, all the best people in the world have huge purses, I’m pretty sure that’s a statistically proven fact 😛

Beth Sheridan @sugarcoatedsheridans June 18, 2013 at 11:37 am

lol oh I love this!! The clear plastic hood…I mean why not?! How functional is that??

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:55 am

The answer: completely functional!! Not to mention adorable on old ladies. It may not look quite so endearing on me though…

Caitlin June 18, 2013 at 11:42 am

Hahaha oh girl I am right there with you! I went to bed at 9 last night with no shame! Running and the boys wear me out haha. And I always dress for comfort over cuteness…only way to get through the day sometines 😛

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:56 am

Yesterday I wore gym shorts and t-shirt to work. Today I actually dressed like a mature adult human being. Sometimes comfort just wins and it is A-okay in my book! 🙂

Becky @ Olives n Wine June 18, 2013 at 1:43 pm

Hahahhaahah – I am SO a grandma. I like to be in bed by 8:30, although in the summer it is realllly hard since it is light out until 9:30. I would also like one of those ninny hats, I hate the wind messing my hair up in the mornings! We’re so cool 😉

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:57 am

You just have to shut all the curtains/blinds in the house and pretend you’re a hermit, then it’ll be dark after 8pm haha Also, I had no idea those clear hoods were lovingly called ninny hats, I am totally stealing your term 😉

Brooke @ Running In Heels June 18, 2013 at 2:44 pm

I can totally relate to this post!! Andy calls me Grandma Brooke at least once a day 🙂

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:57 am

Aww grandma Brooke sounds adorable! Welcome to the granny’s club, leave your walker and ninny hat at the door! 🙂

Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections June 18, 2013 at 3:44 pm

Hah! I love this!

I would say I agree with all of these for myself too. I also love game shows!

My purse is most definitely the Mary Poppins bag as well. I’m also like a grandma in that I can be set in my ways 🙂

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:58 am

Thanks, Melissa 😉 Do you have a favorite game show? I also like old school “Press Your Luck” re-runs from the 70s/80s.

meredith June 18, 2013 at 4:34 pm

I used to love Let’s Make a Deal andPrice is Right. As a kid I loved Double Dare and Fun House. Now I don’t really like game shows, my son does though lol. I am totally old because I love going to sleep early!

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 11:59 am

I went through a phase as a kid where all I watched was game shows and old game show re-runs. It must be a kid thing 🙂

Sarah @ Sweet Miles June 18, 2013 at 4:39 pm

Bahaha loved this. I’m only 24 and sometimes feel like an ‘ole Gran as well!!! 10:30 pm is like…2 am. It’s just way, WAY too late. That plastic hair covering is legit. My grandmother actually DOES wear one every time it rains…I hope that’s not genetic haha. And Mary Poppins is where it’s at…she’s practically perfect in every way 🙂

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 12:00 pm

Sarah my grandma uses a clear rain hat too, it may be genetic 😉 Haha. And it’s so nice to “meet” you. Can’t wait to check your blog out! 🙂

Andrea @Pencils and Pancakes June 18, 2013 at 5:35 pm

UMMMM I’ve been in bed while the sun is still shining every day this week…woops

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 12:01 pm

That is awesome! Welcome to the grandma club, your application has been accepted! Here’s your free set of rollers and bath rob as welcome gifts 😉

Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear? June 18, 2013 at 6:06 pm

Hahahahahahha omg this post was amazing. Seriously, hilarious.

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Thanks, Jess glad you enjoyed my dorkiness haha 🙂

Alex @ therunwithin June 18, 2013 at 8:33 pm

i could have written this verbatim . grandma ways rule

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Legit. Grandmas are amazing and their ways are tried and true.

Jessie June 18, 2013 at 11:25 pm

Ha Ha Ha, the whole purse reason cracked me up! I’m like a grandma when it comes to going to bed early… like 830 early 🙂 Oh & I would much rather stay in and play cards then go out.

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 12:02 pm

We must be kindred souls 🙂 I absolutely LOVE to play cards too. Solataire, pinochle, poker, you name it!

Meredith June 19, 2013 at 4:28 am

LOL loved this post. I am totally a grandma in a few ways: first, I always wear a shower cap if i’m not washing my hair. I don’t think that’s too crazy, but my college roomates thought it was HYSTERICAL. Secondly, I’m totally with you on the plastic hood look and umbrella if it’s raining. Doubling up or whatever it takes to shield me from rain is essential! Third, I like puzzles and boggle and games just as much as my grandmother and I’m totally fine with that : -)

Her Happy Balance June 19, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Thanks, Meredith! And your use of a shower cap, while funny to some, is completely normal and acceptable in my book 😉 As for puzzles and card games, all of those fun grandma pastimes are great ways to spend a Friday night in with friends. Being a grandma isn’t so bad 😉

Alyssa June 19, 2013 at 4:41 pm

Ah… sleep… Just wait until you have small children and want to go to bed when they do 😉

Danielle Dunn January 25, 2015 at 12:49 pm

hehe I am right there with ya girl -I would totally be in bed, lights out by 9…9:30 every night! My mom actually tells me I’m an old lady! that’s probably pretty serious… maybe I should work on being cooler… nah, I kinda like being a 20-something grandma 🙂 #younggrandmasunite

LOL – unite!! Being a grandma ain’t bad 😉 I’m currently enjoying the grandmas-ism of turning the heat in my car up to 85 degrees and cruising, it’s pretty much the best 🙂
