A Workout, Start to Finish!

by Her Happy Balance on January 23, 2013

Have you noticed that it’s still freezing out, yet retailers are sending out their summer wardrobe magazines and stores are being filled with bathing suits and shorts? Ugh. I am too cold to think that summer will soon be knocking on my door. But, the days of weekend beach trips and and lake outings are actually slowly (very, very slowly) creeping up on us. That’s just a little added motivation to amp up your workouts at the gym. This past weekend I tried Cellucor C4 pre-workout supplement for the first time. Here’s what I thought:

Icey Blue Razz, Watermelon, and Fruit Punch shakes

Icey Blue Razz, Watermelon, and Fruit Punch shakes

Pros:

  • The flavors actually tasted good, albeit a bit on the sweet side. It comes in Icey Blue Razz, Watermelon, and Fruit Punch. The fruit punch flavor was reminiscent of my Hi-C juice box days
  • Contains vasodilators to get the blood pumping to your muscles, I felt like I got a better muscle pump
  • Contains beta-alanine, a lactic acid buffer
  • Contains B-12 and other ingredients to amp up your energy
  • Only 5 calories per serving
  • Powder dissolved very well in water, no chalky residue
  • I didn’t experience any side effects like some other pre-workout supplements I have tried (No headaches or GI issues)

Cons:

  • Contains caffeine (to some this is an advantage, others prefer a stimulant free pre-workout)
  • Contains Creatine nitrate (I actually don’t mind this is small quantities)
  • A tad pricey, $49,99 for 60 servings

After I got my fruit punch shake in I headed to the gym and did this workout:

When I got home I definitely needed toย re-hydrate and help my muscles recuperateย so I made this!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake:

1 scoop chocolate protein powder

1 spoonful of PB2

1 spoonful ground flax seed

1 cup of 365 Coconut Water (one of my new Whole Foods products for review)

Sorry guys, I tried to find the coconut water stats online but my blurry photo will have to do...

Sorry guys, I tried to find the coconut water stats online but my blurry photo will have to do…

I’m sure my muscles were happy to have the extra protein and my body was happy with the electrolytes (calcium, potassium, sodium, etc.) from the coconut water.

Ignore my sweatiness people

Ignore my sweatiness people…and my nerdiness…

Blogging has forced me to start taking pictures of everything. Including all of these lovely selfies…

*I was given Cellucor C4 and 365 Coconut Water to try, all thoughts and opinions are my own. I am not a doctor or dietician*

Thoughts??

Have you started shopping for Spring/Summer clothing yet?

What do you put in your protein shake?

Jade January 23, 2013 at 8:00 am

No I am definitely not summer shopping yet! Haven’t even winter shopped yet, lol!

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:41 am

I know, same! Bathing suits?? Is this real life??

pickyrunner January 23, 2013 at 9:02 am

I actually don’t eat protein shakes because my doctor doesn’t believe they are healthy but I would put unhealthy things in it like ice cream and chocolate milk if I did eat them ๐Ÿ™‚

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:43 am

Sounds like an awesome milk shake to me! ๐Ÿ™‚

Running In Heels January 23, 2013 at 10:18 am

I make almost the exact same shake every day for breakfast, but I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk instead of coconut water.. love it! The addition of PB2 takes it over the edge good ๐Ÿ™‚

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:47 am

I’ve just recently started using PB2 and I am loving it. Have you tried the chocolate PB2? Any good?

Brittany January 23, 2013 at 9:37 am

Yesterday I used vanilla protein powder, almond milk, frozen peaches, and a little water to get the best consistency. It was like peach ice cream. My new favorite for sure!

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:44 am

Yum, that sounds really good! Peaches are such a creative idea ๐Ÿ™‚

i still have yet to take selfies… I hate pictures of myself. I am getting better but boy is it tough. I have never heard of these, sound pretty cool though

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:46 am

I know selflies are not my favorite things either…everyone is their own worst critic though.

Maureen January 23, 2013 at 10:06 am

I’m so not ready for spring/summer shopping yet. Spring/summer weather on the other hand, that I will definitely take. ๐Ÿ™‚

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:47 am

Considering anything is better than this negative eleven-teen weather we’re experiencing I am totally on board with a change in climate. No one wants to run in this!

coffeencollege January 23, 2013 at 10:47 am

I haven’t started shopping for spring/summer yet but I honestly can’t wait. I really like the styles and colors I’ve seen so far! Especially @ American Eagle.

Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen January 23, 2013 at 2:24 pm

I’ve been meaning to try coconut water. I actually just bought coconut milk yesterday at the grocery store, which I’m excited to try.

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:08 pm

I think I’ve only ever used coconut milk once in a recipe, let me know if you like it!

Andrea @Pencils and Pancakes January 23, 2013 at 6:38 pm

I wanted to try that pre-workout stuff….but not if it’s caffeine in it tho :(Did it affect your workout at all?

Her Happy Balance January 23, 2013 at 10:10 pm

I definitely do feel more energized and ready to go harder/longer when I take them. I’m not a coffee or tea drinker so I only get caffeine in the little chocolate I eat and with supplements. It didn’t make me jittery though, overall I like it ๐Ÿ™‚

Tiny n Fit January 23, 2013 at 8:49 pm

I’m so not ready for spring shopping yet! I still like buying sweaters!! And that workout looks killer!

Colin DeWaay January 24, 2013 at 10:03 pm

I LOVE C4!!!! No other preworkout gets me pumped up but not like crazy twitchy rage type of pump just good clean sustained energy from start to finish. No crash, it’s just perfect. I hate GNC but every once in a while they will have amazing deals on C4. I stocked up on 3 60 serving containers of it a month ago when then had buy 2 get 1 free and it was like 40% off or something too. It ended up being about 25 bucks per container.

Her Happy Balance January 25, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Yeah it was nice that there wasn’t any tingling from the beta alanine, but I don’t actually mind that feeling either. It was a smooth energy pump.I’m liking it ๐Ÿ™‚ And yeah I like to shop for supplements at Nutrishop, the people are so nice and always let you try stuff before buying it.

Colin DeWaay January 25, 2013 at 8:21 pm

I do get the tingling most of the time, but not always. I LOVE the tingling, actually. Always get bummed when I don’t get it. haha Never heard of Nutrishop but may have to check it out, looks like there are a couple close to me. I get about 90% of my supplements from allstarhealth.com.

bridgetmcgahen February 5, 2013 at 12:04 pm

My protein shake: 1 scoop brown rice protein, 4 ice cubes, 1 heaping tablespoon of almond butter, 1/2 (ish) cup unsweetened almond milk

Her Happy Balance February 5, 2013 at 8:31 pm

I’ve never tried brown rice protein, that’s definitely something I will have to look into now!

Chris February 5, 2013 at 1:48 pm

The reason I like C4 is the simple fact that it banned substance free.

Her Happy Balance February 5, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Yeah, I gotcha. Overall, I’m a pretty big Cellucor fan. Their supplements don’t give me headaches or GI problems…definite plus.

Henry February 6, 2013 at 1:40 pm

I like C4 because it taste good, and gives me a clean feeling while I’m working out.
