Ay Carumba – Salsa Verde Recipe

by Her Happy Balance on July 23, 2013

I’ve got a really great summer recipe for you today. Last week at the farm I picked a quart of tomatillos as a part of the CSA. I don’t know about you, but I had never cooked with tomatillos before and wasn’t really sure what they would taste like. I did a little research and found out that they are the main ingredient in salsa verde! So I got to experimenting in the kitchen, and came up with my own version of the spicy dish!

salsa verde ingredients

Salsa Verde:

~1/2 pound of tomatillos
1 small yellow onion
1/2 of a jalapeΓ±o, seeds removed
1 tbsp. diced green chiles
1 tbsp. minced garlic
1 bunch of cilantro
~1/2 tsp. Kosher salt
Pepper to taste

Chop up your tomatillos, onion, and jalapeΓ±o into 1 inch pieces and place in a food processor. Remove all the leaves from your bunch of cilantro, and add them to the mix. Add your chiles (I used a canned version from TJ’s) and garlic.

Pulse your food processor a few times until all the ingredients are homogenized. Sidenote: If you don’t have a food processor, I’m sure this salsa would come out just fine in a blender. Add in your salt and pepper and mix. I ended up using a decent amount of kosher salt, it really helps to bring out all the flavors. Serve with tortilla chips or as a condiment with your favorite Mexican dish!

Have you ever cooked with tomatillos? How do you use them?

What’s your favorite taco condiment?

Salsa verde is delicious. I found a salsa verde enchilada recipe online a couple years ago that I introduced to my family, and now my mom makes them constantly. I’ve only even bought the canned stuff, though! I loooove Mexican food.

I have never made enchiladas before, I’ve always been a little intimidated. You might have to pass your recipe on to me πŸ˜‰ And I am a HUGE Mexican food fan. I always start out thinking I’ll cook one thing…and then inevitably it always takes on a Mexican inspired flare.

Yum! I love salsa verde! I have been wanting to try tomatillos for awhile now, but was never sure exactly how to utilize them. Now I know! πŸ™‚

Using the tomatillos this way was SOOO easy. I’m thinking about making another batch soon, it took me about 5 minutes haha!

I have never cooked with tomatillos but I am sure I would like this. I love salsa and lately like guacamole but plain and simple avocado is enough to make me happy.

Avocados are a marvelous fruit. They seem to take the flavor of everything up a notch πŸ™‚

I’ve never tried tomatillos before and never even really knew what to do with them. This salsa looks amazing and so fresh!

My fav taco condiment is definitely guacamole!

Her Happy Balance July 24, 2013 at 9:09 am

Holly, don’t even get me started on my love for guacamole πŸ˜‰ Great condiment choice!

This looks awesome girl. I think we got tomatillos at the farmers market last year one time, but I don’t remember what joe did with them πŸ˜› tacos sound right though…my favorite taco topping? Guac. I won’t eat tacos without it πŸ˜‰

Her Happy Balance July 24, 2013 at 9:10 am

I bet some diced up tomatillos would make an excellent taco topping, thanks for that idea! πŸ™‚

I’ve never cooked with them, but love them in my food πŸ™‚ I now want to go buy some and make every dish with them in it!!! Great recipe!

Her Happy Balance July 24, 2013 at 9:11 am

And I swear it was super ridiculously easy to make this salsa. Plus all the ingredients are relatively cheap, so that’s a nice bonus for my wallet πŸ˜‰

Awesome recipe. I’ve never cooked with tomatillos. I never realized they were the main ingredient in that salsa. Guacamole is probably my favorite Mexican topping!

I think it is unanimous, guacamole is a must-have with any and all Mexican food!

Nicole @ Fruitnfitness July 23, 2013 at 1:28 pm

Her Happy Balance July 24, 2013 at 9:13 am

This was a first for me too. I was nervous about how it would taste, but it worked out well πŸ™‚

Jessie July 24, 2013 at 7:01 am

Thanks for this recipe. I’ve never made salsa verde before.. kind of scared how it would really turn out.. but I think you’ve given me the confidence πŸ™‚

Her Happy Balance July 24, 2013 at 9:14 am

I was definitely nervous for how it would taste, but it was nice and fresh and salsa-y. You can totally make it, it was really easy πŸ™‚

Zoe @ Chocolate Covered Chia July 24, 2013 at 8:26 am

I’d have to say that salsa is by far my favorite condiment for tacos…but ive somehow never been a fan of green salsa….But I think thats just because it scared me a little! This recipe looks great πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing.

Her Happy Balance July 24, 2013 at 9:16 am

I have a confession: I also never really liked green salsa haha! But I had a TON of tomatillos and no idea how to use them. I promise this salsa was nice and fresh though, it came out surprisingly well πŸ™‚ Let me know if you get brave and give it a go!
