Beach Must-Haves!

by Her Happy Balance on July 3, 2013

I’ve spent quite a few of my Weekend Recaps talking about my short getaways down the shore. I’ve been frequenting the Jersey shore since I was in diapers. Over the years, I’ve mastered the art of being prepared for a day in the sun and wanted to share my essentials for a fun beach experience – here it goes!

1.) Australian Gold Sunblock. I like this brand of sunblock so much because not only does it keep my skin safe – it was recommended to my family by a dermatologist – but it also smells AMAZING (like coconuts on an island), and has certain blocks that offer bronzer in the formula. For those of you naturally olive-toned bronzed goddesses, this may not be such a big deal. But for this pasty and blindingly white ghost of girl, I will take all the help that I can get!

2.) A Waboba. We prounouce this wa-boob-a, not exactly sure if thats how it’s supposed to be said, but it’s just too fun not to say it that way 😉 Anyway, what is a Waboba? It is a ball that bounces on the water. I kid you not. It is potentially the coolest beach toy ever invented. I bought one of these balls a year or two ago and I still feel like they are an awesome toy that is only secretly known about by a few die-hard beach-goers. Well the cat’s out of the bag now and I seriously suggest you buy one for your next vacation. I haven’t tried it in a pool, but I’m sure it would skid across the surface like it does the ocean.

3.) A Plastic Sandwich Bag. This bag is not for your lunch though, it is for your phone. If you are even somewhat connected to the 21st century, you probably have a cellphone. And if you are a blogger, that cellphone is almost constantly attached to your hand, hip, or ear. Keeping the phone in a sealed baggy still allows you to take it to the beach without worrying about getting granules of sand all up in its nooks and crannies. Plus, I can only speak for the iPhone, but the touch screen still works with your fingers outside of the bag.

4.) Water. This is a given, but laying in the hot sun will dehydrate you. Bring a cooler with drinks that will help to replenish your water stores, like iced tea and water bottles. I would leave the sodas at home as they will only help to dehydrate you further. Side note: no one likes putting their cold bottle down in the sand and having sand stick to the condensation on the bottle. Solution: use a shoe as a coaster. It’s flat and keeps the bottle from spilling, and it will also keep you from gritting sand between your teeth when in falls down from the bottom of the bottle. Of course if you have a fancy beach chair with cup holders…that works too 😉

5.) Appropriate Footwear. Raise your hand if you like running in sand! No one likes running in sand; it’s difficult and slows you down. But running through sand is exactly what you will be doing if you don’t bring appropriate footwear. The beach gets HOT after baking in the sun all day, especially the areas close to the dunes where the waves don’t reach. We’re talking foot blistering, scalding hot. So even if walking barefoot in the morning to your spot on the beach is no big deal, I guarantee you walking home will require footwear. Wearing flip-flops will definitely help keep your feet cool and protect you from broken shells, but they will also kick sand up on the backs of your legs when you walk. The solution? Moccasins or boating shoes. Yes, you read that right, I am telling you the perfect beach shoe is a moccasin or an old pair of Sperry’s. You can still slip them on comfortably in barefeet, but they won’t have you kicking sand up at your calves. Plus they tend to be very open on the top allowing your tootsies to breath.

I'm not talking about fur-lined moccasins, just plain old mocks. (source)

Some other things you will definitely want to bring to the beach include the following: sunglasses or a hat, lip balm to protect your lips from sunburn, a t-shirt just incase you get too much sun and start to burn and need to cover up (it works great as a makeshift pillow as well), snacks, a hair brush to detangle those salty waves after a dip in the ocean, hair clip or hair tie, reading material, and other forms of beach entertainment 🙂

Whats something you cannot go to the beach without bringing?

What’s your favorite brand of sunblock?

Any surfers out there? I’ve never tried surfing but I can skimboard!

I use Australian Gold, too! Twins! I cannot go to the beach without 4 water bottles, snacks, and my floppy hat.

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:04 pm

4 water bottles, such a specific number! Haha 🙂 And yay for sunblock twins, it smells so good, right?!

Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl July 3, 2013 at 8:40 am

I WISH I was a surfer. That is something that I hope to learn (or at least attempt!) at some point in my life.

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:05 pm

Hannah, you are braver than me. I always thought I wanted to surf, and now as I get older I keep thinking how scary it is and how huge the ocean and its waves are. i’d like to think if I had a chance to learn I’d take it though. Gotta at least try it!

The wabooba sounds so cool! My kids would love that. I’m going to look for one!

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:06 pm

They’re pretty inexpensive; I think I paid $12 or so for mine. They have different “qualities” of waboba from normal to pro, I think I just have the normal one and it works really great!

Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness July 3, 2013 at 9:10 am

you know, ive never tried autralian gold, im going to have to pick some up next time i get to the beach. in addition to the fact thats awesome it was recommended by a dermatologist, i love good smelling suntan lotions. like, sometimes i dont even want to shower because i love they way they smell 🙂 (dont worry, i shower, i shower, im just saying i love the smell THAT much) these are great tips! i also like to bring a hat. i usually dont even put it on, but its nice to have that shade on my face if i need it. happy 4th!!

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:08 pm

I completely feel you. The smell is great and because of the bronzer I don’t mind wearing it. Not too greasy or anything 🙂 And I’ve always wanted to rock a straw fedora at the beach, but I also really want my blonde hair to get lighter in the sunlight so I usually never do. Hats on the beach are a great look though.

Meghan @ fitnesscrEATures July 3, 2013 at 9:39 am

Such insightful wisdom and knowledge from my bloggy besty today! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thank you!
First off, I’m right there with ya needing bronzer in my life. I do get tan, but it takes ALL summer and then it goes away so quickly! So ridiculous.
But, what’s even more ridiculous though is the fact that you get to go to the beach whenever you want on the weekends. I will happily trade lives with you at any point to enable that function in my life. I love the beach the most but when you’re in Georgia, the closest thing here is a man made lake that is DEES GUST ING times one million. Also, that ball…. I have NEVER seen it anywhere because if I had, it would have already been mine! While my favorite beach activity is just laying there, I do enjoy some games of fetch and catch! 🙂 That looks awesome. I’ve just added another thing to our fakecation itinerary, FYI.
I am trying to do better about drinking water on the beach, I usually only drink beer. So, I will drink more water next time and my body will thank you for it! Enjoy your Independence Day celebrations my deary, I can’t wait to see what you do! 🙂 You’re the best, have a fabulous day!!
<3<3<3 your bloggy besty. Less than three you!

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:14 pm

I too can tan, but when I am really really tan, people still think I’m pale. Oh well, to me it is bronze goddess status, holla. Oh gosh I cannot do lake water. I want to be all “I’m one with nature” and totally be okay jumping in, but the bottom is usually mud and there could be snakes or eels in there along with God knows what else and I just can’t do it. I’ve been in lakes without my feet touching the bottom and I was mildly okay with (probably stayed in for like 5 minutes or less) but the idea that fish are swimming around me and I can’t see them in the dark water just gets to my inner weinie and we want out. End random water tangent.
So I would totally be down for drinking beer on the beach, however alcohol is not allowed on my beach (lame sauce). If I decided not to be a total goodie two shoes and bring some booze, I could have me a drunken blast I am sure. In fact, lets add that to fakecation activities, illegal drinking followed by illegal sloshiness. hope your fourth is full of firecracker popsicles, fireworks, and corn on the cob 😉 Have a great one darling dearest bloggy pal. Less than three you toooo! <3 <3

I have never heard of a Waboba but that sounds like major fun! As for sunblock I will take any brand that doesn’t feel like sunblock. Neutrogena is usually pretty good for me. Despite the fact that I *know* I need to apply it, I just cringe at the feeling of having it on my skin. It’s nearly always too greasy, heavy or weird feeling – yuck!

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:16 pm

I’ve heard good things about Neutrogena! And I haven’t really noticed the sunscreen being too greasy, but maybe I was too preoccupied with the yummy coconut scent. Definitely try to find a Waboba, they really are a blast 😉

Chelsea @ LittleOneRuns July 3, 2013 at 10:14 am

I feel I must go out and find that sunblock and try it. I’m going to the beach in a couple weeks, I NEED that Waboba! It just sounds like so much fun 🙂 I mean, who doesn’t a ball that bounces?? Always have to have my chapstick and sunglasses!

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Chapstick is underrated when it comes to the beach, but I totally agree it is 100% necessary to save my lips from getting all chapped and burnt!

Rebekah July 3, 2013 at 10:36 am

Soooooooooo, when are you moving in?? I don’t feel like it’s too far off with the way you and Meghan talk. And when is this fakecation happening?? Haha, anyway, the only thing I need at the beach is alcohol. Last year when Meghan and I went to Ft. Lauderdale, we legit walked to a liquor store, bought a bottle of rum, orange juice, and cranberry juice. Sip the juice, fill ‘er up with rum, sit down in the sand, drink and enjoy 🙂 I think we sat there for a few hours, intermittently going for a drunken swim. It was really safe all the way around.

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Sooo between your comment and now, I pretty much have all my stuff loaded on a U-haul…your new roommate is arriving soon! Hope you don’t mind I am calling dibs on the room with the best view! I keeed. Or do I? And I absolutely support drunken swimming…you mean people actually swim sober? They are missing out haha. I am all about some fruity rum cocktails on the beach, let’s do that right now!!! Maybe you can talk Meghan into allowing you to come on the fakecation lol

Becky @ Olives n Wine July 3, 2013 at 10:51 am

I have actually never tried that brand of sunscreen but I’m a sucker for all things coconut-y 😉 Love the idea for a cell phone “case”! My husband actually has a water proof case for his iPhone – it is pretty awesome and he can take underwater pictures and everything!

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:22 pm

I’ve heard about these waterproof iPhone cases. It sounds like such a fun idea, I’m sure you can snap some ridiculously amazing pics! But I think I’d make someone else test the case on their phone first haha That phone is my life and I can’t have it getting waterlogged! 😛

Caitlin July 3, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Awesome list girl! Especially the baggie for the cell phone…I put mine in one when I run before I put it in my armband, too…works like a charm! I wish they’d had those balls when I was a kid, although I have a feeling my brother and I would have gotten in MAJOR trouble with one haha…we got into enough with boogie boards, so I can only imagine what we would have tried to do with a ball that bounces out of the water 😛

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Girl, get a Waboba for you and Joe!!! I’m sure kids would have a blast and a half with it, and maybe I am just an overgrown child, but I love that thing! Also, massive brownie points for your boogie boarding skills. Those were the days!!

Tara July 3, 2013 at 1:44 pm

I never heard of a Waboba, I’m going to have to pick one up next time I go to Santa Barbara so the kids can try it out!

Her Happy Balance July 3, 2013 at 2:24 pm

The Waboba is so much fun!!! Kids and adults alike like it because everyone is always amazed that it really DOES bounce on the water. It is tons of fun and I highly recommend putting one in your beach bag for some water activities 😉

Bezzymates July 3, 2013 at 9:24 pm

Thanks for the tips. I’ll be heading or the beach in 5 days. Love the ziplock bag suggestion. What a great idea.
