Hi, friends – long time, no blog! 2016 started with a frenzy (and a blizzard!) and I have been one busy girl. I think life is starting to settle down a bit, and I wanted to catch you up on what exactly I’ve been up to these last weeks. Let’s just dive right in…

So yeah, Christmas and New Year’s happened. They were both lovely and spent with dear family and friends, but honestly, both came and went with a whirl!

Since then, much of the new year has been spent doing one of 4 tremendously exciting things: working at my job(s), working on school work, working on my dietetic internship applications, or working out. It has been a bit crazed. All work and not a lot of play make for one stressed lady! But the light at the end of the tunnel is nearing, because I am now halfway through my last year of graduate school AND my dietetic internship applications have all been submitted.

Just to put it into perspective here, applying for a dietetic internship was about 100x more stressful (IMHO) than applying to graduate schools. Getting accepted into an internship program, and then completing it, is step 2 of 3 towards attaining my R.D. credentials.

Step 1 – Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (AKA nutrition-specific education)
Step 2 – Internship
Step 3 – RD Exam

However, internships are extremely competitive and the overall acceptance rate into a program is around 50%. So, yeah. Feeling a little bit of pressure on that one. But I feel really fortunate that I chose the graduate program I did. I have had some excellent professors who really went out of their way to ensure all candidates had a variety of opportunities to get experience in the nutrition/dietetics field. So everyone keep those fingers crossed that I get a few interviews and match with an internship. I find out the first weekend in April.

On the workout front, the last time I checked in I was telling you about rehabbing my ITBS with a chiropractic sports physician. Well, I am happy to report that all the therapy worked and I am running some miles again! I actually joined my local running club and have been participating in their winter race series each weekend. These people are crazy and I love it. I showed up for the “Wild Card” race where the distance was not revealed until the week of, but it was only 5.2 miles so I figured it wouldn’t be too tough. What I thought would be a cake walk, ended up being my first taste of trail running on hill after hill of muddy muck. I didn’t know I signed up for that, haha! But it was great, I felt so invigorated running with such enthusiastic people and it has really helped me to push the pace. It is cold as heck in Philadelphia right now, but I try to get outdoor runs in when I feel like the wind won’t eat my face off, and otherwise have been enjoying some time on the treadmill. Running is cool, we’re friends again. My hips and knees still aren’t 100% pain-free, but it is very manageable – foam rolling for the win!

I’ve also been really adamant about trying to regain back the strength I lost during my marathon training. I’ve been hitting the gym hard for some weights and I feel like I’m getting back to my previous fitness level. I’m trying to come to terms with having conflicting fitness goals – run a marathon / body building – and find a happy balance (see what I did there?!) between the two. It’s going 🙂

Girls who lift

One of my goals for 2016 is to embrace a more natural and holistic lifestyle. Have no fear – I’m still a science-loving geek, so I won’t be throwing away my OTC medicines anytime soon. But I am trying to reduce the chemicals in my life. Using more natural cleaning products and toiletries is something I am working on. I actually requested an essential oils starter kit for Christmas and have really enjoyed incorporating them into my life. And by “really enjoyed” I mean have become slightly obsessed with them. I joke with friends that I am turning into a crunchy granola hippy. But let’s be real, I’ve always been a believer in the power of metaphysics and a bit alternative, so I feel like this fits right in with that. I’ll try to get a few posts up soon about how I use them and different blend recipes, but in the meantime if you’re at all interested, my Young Living sponsor/enroller number is 3528482 and I’d be happy to chat it up with you 😉

So, that is where I am at friends. Chugging along on the busy train – choo choo! But aren’t we all just so busy? I wanted to let you know that now that things have simmered down a bit you should be hearing from me more. In fact, I have a fun review coming at you very soon!

P.S. – I just found out that the Philadelphia Marathon committee approved my deferral request. Philly Marathon 2016, here I come!

What is the busiest aspect of your life right now?
Have you ever tried essential oils?
I’m a little late to the party, but what is one of your goals for 2016?

Woo hoo! I’m trying to get back into blogging again, albeit with a different blog. I’m prepping for a move across the globe, so that’s the busiest part for me right now!!! I’m trying to get loose ends tied up here and then get myself set up over in Australia, before I’ve even moved! I’ve never tried essential oils, but I am a granola crunching hippie 😉 so I am interested in them! I’m really interested in learning how to make my own sunscreen and toiletries. You’re in good company 😉

Thanks, Autumn! Me too 🙂 Even on the days when the last thing I feel like doing is dragging myself out into the cold to run, I’m always happy after I have.
