FNCE 2016 in Boston – Pt. II

by Her Happy Balance on October 24, 2016

Happy Monday, y’all! Today I am checking in with Pt. II of my trip to Boston for the 2016 Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE). If you missed Pt. I you can find that here. Now, let’s dive right in to all the #RD2Be fun!

Sunday morning I woke up and boarded a hotel shuttle van over to the Boston Convention Center for the first full day of activities. I was greeted with an expo featuring healthy food and supplement brands as far as the eye could see!

Chobani was one of my favorite exhibitors, they provided me with breakfast (and sometimes lunch!) every day at the conference. During my trip I tried their seasonal blended pumpkin yogurt, two different Chobani flips and their new on-the go yogurt drinks. The apple veg flavor was on point! Chobani also featured samplings of different recipes each day like Red Velvet Beet Pancakes, Yogurt Dressed Kale Caesar Salad, and different parfait creations.

I spent Sunday morning walking around the expo talking with different brand representatives, sampling just about every protein and granola bar under the sun, and I even ran into my grad school gal pal Liz who is currently interning in Florida.

I missed you Slizard!

For Sunday afternoon I hit up a cooking demonstration given by the Hass Avocado Board as well as a few different talks by professionals in the dietetics field. The Hass Avocado chefs prepared a chipotle avocado and quinoa breakfast bowl and demonstrated how to create those pretty avocado roses that have been breaking the internet recently. As for the talks, I attended one on Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) & picky eaters and another on nutrient deficiencies in autism. It was a day jam-packed with activities.

For Sunday’s dinner I met up with Liz and some of her friends at a popular tapas place called Toro. We split lots of yummy plates including Mexican street corn, stuffed dates, and sauteed shishito peppers. I had an excellent grilled octopus course as my main plate.

After dinner I was exhausted and called it an early night. Monday I woke up and started all over again. It was a day of more granola bar tastings, vitamin samplings, and expo adventures. For lectures that day I went to an awesome sports nutrition talk about endurance training adaptation in skeletal muscle by nutritional manipulation. I am super interested in getting involved in sports nutrition once I have my registered dietitian credential, so I was captivated for the entirety of the talk. I finished out the day by attending an excellent talk on orthorexia given by the creator of the term orthorexia himself!

Monday night I ventured into the north end, or Boston’s Little Italy, for a group intern dinner at Gennaro’s at 5 North Square! We sipped on delicious cocktails – classic old fashioned for me – and bonded over our experiences at FNCE and in the dietetic internship thus far. I ordered one of the specials that night – wild salmon served over lemon-saffron mashed potatoes and served with broccoli rabe and clam sauce. The service and food were both top notch.

After dinner we put on our tourist pants and walked over to Mike’s Pastry where we waited in line for cannoli. I chose a caramel pecan cannolo and it was heavenly. I went back to my hotel room and ate it in bed – it was my hot Monday night date and I have no regrets!

Tuesday morning was the last day of FNCE. The talks that day did not really pique my interest, so I slept in a bit before taking part in one last day of expo madness. I won a raffle for protein powder and ended up coming home with TONS of goodies.

I have enough protein bars, oatmeal packets, shakes, and snack-sized portions of nuts and dried fruit to last me until 2017. When I got back to CT Tuesday evening I was conference-ed out! My first experience at FNCE was a blast and a half with tons of great new-to-me brands and excellent speakers. Boston was a great host city, but it made me miss my hometown of Philadelphia!

FNCE is being held in Chicago next year and I would absolutely jump at the chance to go! I look forward to the day I can retire my Rd2Be status – I should have my RD credential my next go around at FNCE 😉

Thank you for reading, friends! Have you been introduced to any new health food brands recently? Make sure to share your favorites in the comments!
