Friday Favorites – Running Addition

by Her Happy Balance on February 22, 2013

TGIF! I didn’t have off from work for President’s Day this week (I’m still jealous of you lucky ones who did!), but the week still went by pretty quickly! A lot of my workouts and free time revolved around running. That being so, here’s some of my favorite parts from the week:

If you had a chance to read my little blog recently, then you know that I signed up for a 5k! 3.1 miles isn’t a very long distance, but being a girl that has only really ran for myself, it’s a great way to break into the racing world. I signed up for the Guts and Glory 5k and the proceeds benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. The best part, the race is down the shore! So I”ll take a mini vacation to go and run it 🙂

guts and glory

This week I created a rather MASSIVE to-do list. It may be nerdy, but I really enjoy creating to-do lists. I broke this one down into 4 different categories; fitness, blogging, career, and miscellaneous. There are way too many tasks that I need to get going on under each header if you ask me. But it makes me feel more organized and I’m more likely to complete things if it is on a list…mostly because I like crossing them off! Under “fitness” I have listed that I want to find a running training plan and also sign up for 2 more races.

After yesterday’s post, I decided that I needed to invest in a foam roller. You guys gave me a bunch of positive feedback on the wonders of rolling, so I want in! I did a little research and decided this one is best for me. Cannot wait for it to come in the mail!

I choose the 3' one, it seemed like the most versatile option.

I choose the 3 foot long one, it seemed like the most versatile option.

I loved receiving that awesome swag bag of goodies from Christine at Life Happens earlier in the week. It came with a Women’s Health Training Guide for 2013. I have been reading it on the train in the morning and it has given me some great new exercises to try like a butterfly sit-up. It has also opened up a whole new can of worms…receiving TONS of workout advice from my random train seat mates. Thank you train-goers for all the random Yoga DVD suggestions, thoughts on my diet, and other detailed fitness advice. I mean I was just trying to read my book…but I think you were reading my book too! Never a dull moment on the train.

How did I never think to try this out before?

Yesterday’s healthysELF challenge was to make a green smoothie. So last night I got in my HIIT workout, then made this juice to refuel. It included basil, mixed greens, cucumber, kiwi and an orange. Really loved the basil taste!

And as a bonus favorite, my February Bulu Box finally came! And I love it 🙂 I’m mostly looking forward to the double cheesy kale chips! If you want a break down of the products, Brooke at Running in Heels wrote a review that you should check out!

February goodies!

Thoughts??

Do you like to choose races in other cities so you can get a little traveling in?

Do you find making to-do lists to be helpful?

What were some of your Friday favorites?

I like traveling for races a lot. It’s nice to make a mini vacay and see how diff races operate. Good luck with training!

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 10:34 am

Thank you! I plan on running my little heart out over these next months. I want to do longer distance races eventually 🙂

RachLapchak February 22, 2013 at 7:59 am

Love making lists for everything! My boyfriend always makes fun of me but they are super helpful. Good luck with the 5k!

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 10:33 am

Thanks, Rachel! 🙂 And to-do lists are the best, they keep me motivated!

quartercenturysouthernliving February 22, 2013 at 8:15 am

Happy Friday!! I love to sign up for races in other cities – It makes it a whole weekend thing instead of just a morning race! 🙂

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 10:34 am

That’s what I was going for! I’ll make any excuse to take a beach trip!

jumpeatrun February 22, 2013 at 9:23 am

Yay for signing up for a race!!! So exciting! I would love to travel for more races, but I can’t afford it, so i usually just do races close to home. I am definitely going to try those butterfly sit-ups…i have never thought to do them that way either! And, you are going to LOVE the foam roller…3 feet seems really long!

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 10:36 am

haha well it will definitely be an adventure rolling all over the floor, I’m sure the first few times will be highly amusing! And doing any race – near, far, short, long is still impressive in my book!

The Classy Bee February 22, 2013 at 9:55 am

Way to go on the list girl! They’re always helpful, and your what you’ve been eating lately in so motivational! I need more green things 🙂

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 10:38 am

Thanks, Bethany! My life is a never-ending to-do list haha And I think the secret to eating more greens is to buy a bunch of greens in bulk, then you feel like you HAVE to eat them all before they go bad so you don’t waste your money!

Amanda February 22, 2013 at 11:09 am

Good luck with the 5k! I’m sure you’ll love it. I love how you’ve color coded your list. I never really do that, but I always have a running list in my planner and on my desk at work to keep me organized.

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 1:35 pm

Thank you! And color-coding just makes the to-do list much more appealing for me to look at…I figure if I look at it more I’ll hopefully do more of the tasks!

Alex @ therunwithin February 22, 2013 at 10:25 am

we are the same person, who doesn’t color code their to do lists? I mean really. that is just inefficient. haha. man that bulu box looks awesome!

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 10:39 am

I’m an absurd amount of excited over the Bulu Box this month, so many energy shakes to try! And color-coding is pretty much mandatory. I even considered creating a legend at the bottom so I could put weird symbols next to certain tasks…it was tough but I refrained from that level of nerdiness.

Katie February 22, 2013 at 12:26 pm

I agree with you on the To-Do lists! I am the to-do list queen and it’s always fun to color code them HAHA!

Your green smoothie sounds delicious! I had a green smoothie for my lunch drink during my 3 day juice detox and HATED it. Mostly because the recipes were to be blended and celery does not blend. I really do need to try out different recipes since green veggies are so good for you!

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 1:37 pm

Oh lord un-blended celery does not sound too appealing! I honestly don’t even like to juice celery…I think it overwhelms the juice. There are some great green juices out there though, cucumbers are great to juice, they’re so subtle. And i put kale in smoothies sometimes. The key is to freeze the kale first that way I’ve found it blends better.

kloesampson February 22, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Oh I’m so happy you’ve found a love for running and you’ve signed up for a 5K! your first race really does kick start the crazy love for running, watch out 😉 I had my first race last year, and now I’m injured it’s horrible to not run for at least 8 weeks!! best of luck on that 5K and kick some butt 🙂

I’m SUCH a sucker for a good list; for me I love having goals written down too, it makes me more accountable and more motivated to get out there and complete them! and what good aspects of your life your focussing on- Defijitely taking a leaf out of your book and doing my own 🙂

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 4:39 pm

I ran a fun race (a color run) last year but I’ve never done a race for time before so I really want to train hard. I’m sorry about your fracture 🙁 I’m sure you’ll figure out some other sort of workout to make the time fly by though!

And lists are just tremendously helpful! Glad you’re making one too, bloggy twins 🙂

Brittany February 22, 2013 at 12:57 pm

All of the races I’ve run have been in different cities, but still fairly close. The furthest I’ve traveled was to Disneyland for the half marathon!!! WAHOO, that vacation was amazing.

Her Happy Balance February 22, 2013 at 4:40 pm

A Disneyland trip sounds like such a fantastic race! Did a lot of the runners dress up like princesses? I think I’d need to rock something Mickey Mouse if I ran in it 🙂

Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen February 22, 2013 at 5:04 pm

That’s exciting you signed up for that race! I find that when I sign up for races, I’m so motivated to make running my cardio almost everyday. I think it’s about time I sign up for one!

Her Happy Balance February 25, 2013 at 3:46 pm

Do it, it definitely is motivating 🙂

blonde hair blue eyed runner February 22, 2013 at 5:47 pm

I’ve been considering getting a foam roller too. Great job on signing up for a race!

Her Happy Balance February 25, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Thank you, and I think mine is scheduled to arrive today so we shall see how it goes 🙂

Flake And Cake February 23, 2013 at 5:01 am

Thanks, girlfriend! I hope so!

Apples and Arteries February 23, 2013 at 9:03 am

Lists are critical! I’m working on my grocery list right now.

Her Happy Balance February 25, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Hope you picked up some delicious food!

jessiebearwhat February 23, 2013 at 11:14 am

I feel like I should use a foam roller, but I have no idea what I’m doing and feel silly on them haha. Congrats again for signing up for the 5k!

Her Happy Balance February 25, 2013 at 3:48 pm

Thanks, girly! And yes, the first time I use it I am going to look like a total loon I am sure haha
