“Greek” Caesar Salad Dressing

by Her Happy Balance on May 8, 2013

Now, I know some of you are going to think I’m crazy when I say this, but this salad dressing is amazing…and it’s loaded with feta cheese and anchovies. You’re probably shaking your head already thinking there’s no way you’d ever make this dressing. Feta cheese? Gross. Anchovies? Double gross!

crazy ecard

Well friends, I hate to blow your minds, but these are the two main ingredients in my super awesome dressing. Give it a chance…it tastes better than it sounds, pinky promise 🙂

greek caesar dress

“Greek” Caesar Salad Dressing:

1 egg

1 cup corn oil

1/4 cup vinegar

1 tbsp. lemon juice

1 oz. anchovies (about 3 fish) finely chopped

1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

1/4 tsp. salt

1 tsp. pepper

In a blender or food processor, whiz one egg until light-colored. Gradually add corn oil until everything is well homogenized. Add vinegar, salt, pepper, lemon juice and mix. Then add your anchovies and feta and give the blender a quick jolt.  Your dressing should be mostly smooth with a few residual feta crumbles for texture. If you’d rather a completely smooth and creamy dressing, blend everything until the consistency is the same throughout.

Up Close and Personal View of my salad. I added extra crumbles of feta to my salad because I actually really like it :)

Fact: Anchovies are a rich source of iron, calcium, vitamin A and omega-3’s (source)

Second Fact: Feta cheese is a good source of protein and contains a mere third of the calories that cheddar cheese contains. (source)

Thoughts??

Do you like feta cheese? Greek food?

Are you one of those crazies that orders pizza with anchovies on top? What your favorite type of pizza?

Is this recipe way out of your comfort zone? (I’ll admit the first time I made it I was skeptical…)

I’ve actually never tried anchovies before… but i’m very intrigued by the recipe. I mean anything that contains feta cheese has always been a success in my book, so I can’t see it not being delicious!

Anchovies are the secret ingredient in really delicious Caesar salad dressing recipes that make it taste so good! I promise that even though they’re fish, they’re not at all fishy. And feta is pretty darn tasty 🙂

Meredith May 8, 2013 at 11:18 am

I love feta cheese so much, but I’m a bit scared of the anchovies. Can you taste them at all? Feta is a pretty strong taste so I’d be willing to give it a try 🙂

Her Happy Balance May 8, 2013 at 11:49 pm

The anchovies don’t taste like fish, they just add a salty aspect to recipes. And feta is awesome, right? I love that it’s one of the lowest calorie cheeses that packs the greatest punch.

I LOVE feta cheese tons and tons but anchovies? Bestie, you’re on your own! But, I would be willing to try it so on my fakecation coming up really soon at some ambiguous time; you may make it for me and I shall try it. 🙂 I bet it was really good, I mean it’s the main stuff in Caesar salad dressing and I love it!
My favorite pizza topping is mushrooms. They soak up all the grease from the cheese and taste the best! 🙂 Haha!

Her Happy Balance May 8, 2013 at 11:52 pm

My favorite pizza topping is mushrooms too! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised as we are essentially the same (awesome) person 😉 And okay, I will make it for you when you come and visit me. I will also have a jar of cookie butter with your name on it waiting for ya!

I used to LOVE caesar salad dressing, but now that I am a vegetarian and do not eat anchovies I can no longer eat it :(.

Her Happy Balance May 8, 2013 at 11:57 pm

Oh no! Hmm I’m not exactly sure what the anchovies could be replaced with. In your vegetarian adventures have you found anything comparable to make caesar dressing with? The anchovies are essentially in the recipe for the salty aspect.

Gina @ Noshing on Asphalt May 8, 2013 at 5:41 pm

I adore feta with all of my heart! (Especially on pizza. YUM!!!)

Her Happy Balance May 8, 2013 at 11:58 pm

I love it too! Unfortunately the rest of my family isn’t too keen on it, they’re lose!

Chelsea @ LittleOneRuns May 8, 2013 at 2:16 pm

I don’t know if I could make this lol. I think the fact that I would physically be putting in the anchovies would “make” me taste them. I love feta it just doesn’t love me back, being lactose intolerant sucks the fun out of eating sometimes! Your salad looks amazing though 🙂

Her Happy Balance May 8, 2013 at 11:54 pm

LOL! I guess I can understand that. Maybe if someone else made the recipe and then you tried it not knowing the ingredients you’d like it 🙂 And my body’s the same way with spicy food. I love it, it does not. I probably shouldn’t, but I eat it anyway…it’s just so good!

I love feta cheese. Greek food is so good. I’m not an anchovies fan unless they are in dressings like yours. Looks like you made real caesar dressing since it has an egg in it!

Her Happy Balance May 9, 2013 at 12:03 am

Greek food is the bomb. (Excuse my early 2000’s slang) I like to think it’s a real version of caesar dressing 🙂 And I think the best caesar’s always have anchovies in them. Like you said, I wouldn’t eat the fish alone, but they’re great for dressings!

Brittany May 8, 2013 at 11:53 pm

I don’t eat cheese anymore, but when I did I LOVED feta. This dressing sounds good, anchovies are in almost all Caesar dressings and most people don’t even realize it!

Her Happy Balance May 9, 2013 at 12:04 am

You are so right! The best Caesar dressings always have anchovies, and I have this irrational dislike for when people ask for Caesar salad without anchovies….but that’s the best part!

Maddy May 9, 2013 at 1:58 am

This looks awesome. I love feta cheese and anchovies…am I weird?? 🙁 ha.

Her Happy Balance May 9, 2013 at 1:26 pm

No, you are not weird. You are actually AWESOME! Not only do these foods taste totally delicious, but they’re really pretty great for you too! Thanks for stopping by my site, Maddy! I’ll have to check out yours 🙂

Kristina May 9, 2013 at 5:31 am

I’m in the pro-caesar camp but I’ve never really thought about the anchovies. I love them in the dressing but I’m scared to try them otherwise. This looks like a great recipe though. I’m game 🙂

Her Happy Balance May 9, 2013 at 1:27 pm

That’s what I like to hear! You can’t knock something until you’ve tried it 🙂 And anchovies really do make Caesar salad taste better…I consider them the hidden weird ingredient!

meredith May 9, 2013 at 12:11 pm

I don’t totally love or crave greek food but if I do, it is in the form of my favorite vegetarian place – MAOZ. I dream about the endless salad bowl I get to create myself lol….loving the new site design btw, I have been working on figuring out my own these days!

Her Happy Balance May 9, 2013 at 1:28 pm

I’m assuming MOAZ is in NY? I’m not a vegetarian but I’d love to try it out! And thank you so much, it has been quite a process. Good luck with your blog renovations as well! 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear? May 9, 2013 at 2:59 pm

Oh man, I feel like a lot of people will be grossed out by this, but I’m literally salivating right now hahaha. Yuuuuuum

Her Happy Balance May 9, 2013 at 3:07 pm

Lol! I know that the minute I said the word anchovies a lot of readers were probably thinking ‘blech” but I promise it tastes delish 🙂
