I Probably Shouldn’t be a Blogger… but I Love it!

by Her Happy Balance on February 11, 2013

I think when I told my boyfriend that I was going to start a blog he was truly surprised. I can’t say that I blame him, I am probably the most least likely person to start a blog, and here’s 3 reasons why:

  • What is computer? I have the technological capabilities of a 90-year-old woman. I have no idea about coding or html and I don’t have tons of patience to sit down and learn. I actually just joined the world of Macs and am constantly asking my coworkers to help me find my own files on my computer. And it takes me about an hour to copy and paste or share documents with others through email or on a server. I actually have the IT guy’s phone number in my cell and shamelessly flirt with him so he’ll come and fix things for me. I’m not proud of it, but for the life of me I don’t know how to hook up a printer to a computer.
  • I am an extremely private person. For the most part I try to keep my posts just about workouts, products, and recipes. I hope I start to feel comfortable enough to start sharing about my personal life, but I’m really just very private. In fact, I think I’ve perfected the art of having someone else think they know me without actually having to share too much about myself. I’m pretty good at asking questions and getting people to open up to me, but have a difficult time opening up in exchange back. It’s something I’m working on and I think blogging is helping me with it

  • I have a busy schedule. We all do. Blogging takes a pretty decent amount of time for me, mostly because of reason one.

Now that I’ve told you some of the reasons why I am an unlikely blogger, let me tell you some of the reasons why I love blogging:

  • Becoming a part of the blogging community means constantly learning. You guys are constantly posting awesome healthy recipes, reviews of great restaurants, and how you stay fit on-the-go. It really is inspiring. Plus now I have an ever growing list of things I need to do, make, and try! And I can’t forget to mention how fun it is entering giveaways and getting the opportunity to try new products. Blogging opened up my eyes to so many new and unique trending things; whereas I will admit that previously I had lived under a rock. It was a nice cozy rock, but a rock just the same.

A giveaway I recently won, a case of lentil chips. So fun!

A giveaway I recently won, a case of lentil chips. So fun!

  • The support is outrageous! If someone posts about how they’re feeling under the weather, everyone floods them with tons of comments wishing them well and volunteering recipes for their grandmother’s cure-all chicken noodle soup. It’s really amazing to me. Β I waited so long to start blogging because I was worried that A- no one would care about my posts and B- that I’d be judged. That is just not the case though. You guys are ridiculously encouraging!
  • Blogging is a way for me to keep myself accountable. It’s almost like I’m keeping a health journal and you guys are kind enough to keep giving me the push to keep going along with it.

I think what I’m trying to say is that I love this bloggy thing. I started it as an outlet for my sanity, talking about things that really matter to me and not letting myself get lost in the every day hustle and bustle. I wasn’t sure how successful I would be at it or if I’d even keep up with it. I’m three Β months in now and even though I may bore the crap out of you guys sharing what I had for lunch, I think I’ll keep at it πŸ™‚ Thanks bloggy friends, you guys are the best!

P.S. my parents still have no idea that I have a blog. They think I’m a weirdo who constantly likes taking pictures of their food. My mom also thinks I have somehow gotten myself into “the vitamin circuit” (what does that even mean?!) as I’ve been getting a lot of health food and vitamins to try in the mail. Interesting…

When you started blogging, did you share it with everyone or keep it private?

Why do you blog?

This was so fun to read! I’m so glad that you do blog!

I didn’t tell everyone at first. Mostly just my fiance and family. Now my friends know about it too. They’re all really supportive of it, which is really nice because blogging is my little happy place πŸ™‚

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Oh thank you so much, Kate! I am loving your blog too and all your adorable pup pictures! I get what you mean, blogging becomes a nice staple in your life, something you do just for you πŸ™‚

Sarah C February 11, 2013 at 8:30 am

I actually started blogging at the suggestion of my coworker/partner in crime … and I had no idea how much I would end up loving it. It’s a great outlet to get your thoughts out there – and you’re totally right, the support from other bloggers is AMAZING. Keep up the great work – this is pretty fun πŸ˜‰

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:02 pm

Right?! Bloggers are so kind and encouraging! I’ve checked out your blog and it’s great; sounds like you have a great partner in crime for recognizing what a great thing you could start!

Tiny n Fit February 11, 2013 at 8:33 am

Yay for blogging! I only told a couple people- mainly one of my best girlfriends who also has her own blog and who urged me to write one! I think I just recently told my mom I have one, and I’ve been writing at Tiny n Fit for over a year! Keep on it girly πŸ™‚

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:09 pm

I’ll definitely keep on chuggin’ along, thanks lady! πŸ™‚ Does your mom like to read your posts? I’m worried about telling my mom because she is always concerned about internet safety…

RachLapchak February 11, 2013 at 8:56 am

I started my blog back in August because my boyfriend was always blogging. He was doing his blog as part of marketing for his job. I would get annoyed because I would just be sitting there watching him, so I decided to start my own. I didn’t really have a direction or a specific idea that I wanted to blog about; I figured I’d keep it random, and it ended up blowing up into a huge part of my life. I love it!

Keep up the great work with your blog! I always look forward to new posts from you! And it definitely is hard with busy schedules, but you can always try and squeeze anything in to the 24 hours that we have each day haha.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:11 pm

That sounds like a great reason to start a blog to me! You can be blogging buddies πŸ™‚ Glad you’re loving blogging, I’m loving reading it! Thank you so much for reading mine, I’m definitely trying. It’s so time-consuming, but it’s something we do for us, so I can justify that πŸ™‚

jessiebearwhat February 11, 2013 at 9:29 am

Haha that is so funny that your parents don’t know. Why haven’t you told them? hahaha. I’m glad you started blogging!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:13 pm

Thanks, girly! πŸ™‚ And I haven’t told them because they’re really conscientious about privacy and the internet. I think my mom would worry someone would track me down! Mom problems I guess haha

jumpeatrun February 11, 2013 at 9:29 am

Man, blogging seriously does take a lot of time. It was so much easier when I wasn’t working full time! haha. I definitely love the support in the community too πŸ™‚

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:14 pm

The support makes all the hard work and time worth it πŸ™‚

Flake And Cake February 11, 2013 at 9:40 am

I love this post! I’m similar to you, I am private (though I’m working on it and blogging has def helped me break down some barriers there!) and I hardly have any time either but that’s the great thing about blogging, you learn how to make it work for you. I love the community online and the support you get from other bloggers. Blogging makes me push myself and try new things, forces me out of my comfort zone and think about my experiences in a new way.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:17 pm

Such good points! I’ve been hearing everyone talk about crossfit and these other group fitness classes. It’s making me think I should get out of my comfort zone and give one a try! The blogging community is so kind and accepting, I just love it! And shy bloggers unite! Blogging definitely does make you branch out and share more.

Alex @ therunwithin February 11, 2013 at 9:57 am

my parents still laugh when I talk about my blog, they think it is just like a small journal I have, if only they knew! I too suck at all things computer, I had no idea you were the same way. also my busy schedule totally makes me overly crazy when it comes to blogging. two peas in a pod right there!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:19 pm

Oh parental figures, that’s just too funny! And you have me fooled about not being computer savvy, your gifs always impress me! πŸ™‚

Maureen February 11, 2013 at 11:01 am

A friend suggested I start writing when I was training for my marathon last year. It became a great outlet to talk about my training without boring my non-running friends to tears. Plus I’ve “met” some cool people along the way!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:21 pm

I know it is so fun to “meet” people. I actually feel like I know some bloggers now even though I’ve never met them in person. Glad your friend asked you start a blog, I’m loving getting a glimpse into your runs!

carlyjg February 11, 2013 at 11:58 am

Blogging is such a strange form of communication, but I absolutely love it! It makes the world seem much, much smaller!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:22 pm

That’s true! You can connect with people all over the blog, it’s so fun!

Living Healthy February 11, 2013 at 12:10 pm

My fitness blog is pretty new, but before that ive had 3 different blogs, and one was very successful.. i still blog on it!! Though, that one is about my recovery frmo my ED!
I love the blogging world. Sharing my thoughts, getting comments and feeling that i can help others! πŸ™‚
That is my favourite!! And i love now with my new blog, how i have this connection with others who are livnig the same way! As many dont understand this healthy lifestyle, about eating clean and exercising! They either think im a gym/exercise freak.. which iguess i am in a way… or some constant dietier… which i definitely amnt!
So i love this blogging/health community, where others understnad me and my way of living!! πŸ™‚
And i love your blog πŸ™‚ And everything you write about!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:32 pm

You’re a blogging veteran then! πŸ™‚ And that’s really wonderful to hear that you’ve recovered from your ED, that’s very inspiring. The blogging community is such a great thing to be a part of.

I can definitely understand the need to connect with other healthy living bloggers. It is a lifestyle and knowing other people have the same goals and ideals is great encouragement. I definitely love to work out too and doing it on a daily basis can be intimidating or strange to some people, but as long as you’re smart and safe about it I don’t think it’s a problem πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading my blog, I really appreciate it, Isabelle! πŸ™‚

deniliese February 11, 2013 at 1:52 pm

I just told my mom this weekend that I’ve started blogging and my boyfriend is a sports blogger (insert superiority complex here) and they’re both indifferent about it. I like it because of the support and it’s an outlet for my anxiety! Last night I was feeling down so I caught up on everyone’s weekend posts and was instantly in a better mood πŸ™‚

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:35 pm

That’s so true! I love starting my morning reading as many blogs as I can over breakfast. Then I check the feed again for new posts before bed. Blogging, although time-consuming, is relaxing. Keep up your good work, I’m enjoying your bloggy lots πŸ™‚

Andrea @Pencils and Pancakes February 11, 2013 at 1:07 pm

I share mine on Facebook, and my mom is probably my number one fan! I just try to keep it private at work, except for sharing some lessons.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:33 pm

Aww, that is so sweet! Yay for your mama! I can definitely relate to keeping it private from your work, especially since you’re a teacher.

Cindy February 11, 2013 at 1:55 pm

Glad you do blog πŸ˜€ I had to laugh about taking pictures of food…just always seems strange. Maybe if I were a professional photographer I wouldn’t feel strange.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Thank you, Cindy! Taking food pictures is slightly embarrassing, but it just makes a post so much better when you have photographic proof to back it up haha

katie February 11, 2013 at 2:32 pm

I just started blogging myself… I decided to do a year long Happiness Project from the book by Gretchin Rubin and thought it would be fun to blog about it… I have only told a few people I know about it because I guess I am just doing it for myself… but I love it! I have been following your blog from early on because another blog I follow suggested it (can’t remember who ekk!) and I love it! I totally agree with sometimes blogging can be overwhelming but its fun and adds another balance in our lives!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:38 pm

I checked out your blog today, it’s really an awesome one! Doing it for yourself is all that matters; if you’re happy doing it, then it’s a good outlet! Thank you so much for following me, i really appreciate it!! πŸ™‚ Blogging has become a nice staple in my life.

Becky @ Olives n Wine February 11, 2013 at 3:00 pm

I am also somewhat of a private and shy person. I love blogging because it allows me to express myself without having to stand up in front of a crowd πŸ™‚ My husband says that I “work” too much on the blog but to me it isn’t work! It is super relaxing for me to just sit down and write.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:41 pm

I started blogging because I found my job to be pretty stressful and I needed to do something just for me. It’s really been a great way for me to relax too. I’m loving your blog, so tell you’re hubby you’ve got some “work” to do and write us up some more posts πŸ˜‰

balancingonhoney February 11, 2013 at 5:15 pm

This is an AWESOME post! I love it. I think you should probably definitely be a blogger because I love your blog! I shared it with all of my family, because I am a person who likes affirmation lol, and I blog because I want to “constantly learn” and it really does keep me accountable.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Thanks so much for reading, lady! πŸ™‚ What you say about getting affirmation from sharing is definitely true. I plan on sharing it with my family one day… πŸ™‚ The constantly learning part has to be one of the greatest aspects, but there are just so many benefits from blogging. It’s just a great world.

Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections February 11, 2013 at 4:37 pm

I absolutely love this post. Considering you don’t like to open up much, this is quite transparent! Honestly, I feel like most bloggers are not likely bloggers. I mean, is any our daily lives really THAT interesting enough to write about it every day? Probably not. And yet, the blogger community is really all about connecting, learning, and to me – finding myself.

I blog because I LOVE to write. For being technically challenged, your blog looks great, though!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:43 pm

Thank you, Melissa! I’m really working on opening up, I can’t actually pin point the reason why it’s so difficult for me. Blogging is definitely helping though πŸ™‚ You’re so right too, most blog posts I read are about a few small moments in someone’s day, but blogger’s just make everything sound so interesting! Your love of writing shows in your blog, it’s pretty great πŸ™‚

Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections February 12, 2013 at 9:52 am

Aw, thanks! Keep at it and I think opening up becomes easier over time.

bezzymates February 11, 2013 at 6:04 pm

Great post. I’m sure your computer skills aren’t as bad as mine. Lol. The point about keeping yourself accountable really resonated with me. I always think, should I really be eating this chocolate cake when I blog about wellness? Then I reach for an apple instead, so it works.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:47 pm

I know exactly what you mean! Healthy options are always available, sometimes it’s just so tempting to take the unhealthy one though. Blogging definitely helps me to pick the healthier options more often…but a little treat isn’t bad every once and a while either πŸ˜‰

bezzymates February 12, 2013 at 7:18 pm

Absolutely a treat now and then. It’s all about “her happy balance.”

TorontoRunner February 11, 2013 at 6:30 pm

aww great post!!
I’m a private person too..so really would like to share more than just running, but I get super nervous about it. Hopefully one day?!
And you are very right, the support REALLY is amazing in the blogging community – I’ve loved everything about it!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:48 pm

I totally hear you, but we’ll get there one day though! And in the mean time I’m really enjoying your running posts so keep those coming!

jsresults February 11, 2013 at 7:24 pm

This is so true. All that you wrote, the accountability, the motivation, the recipes. So true!

I was very selective with who I told. I knew that some people would be supportive so I let them know, others I knew would give me a hard time :/

I primarily blog about fitness and nutrition πŸ™‚

Your blog is kicking butt!

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:50 pm

I think blogging can sometimes get a bag rep for being nerdy, but once you give it a try and see all the benefits you get from it there’s no going back! πŸ™‚ Thanks for the kind words, I’m enjoying your protein packed breakfasts and killer workout posts!

jsresults February 12, 2013 at 7:06 am

haha thank you! πŸ™‚

Brittany February 11, 2013 at 8:04 pm

It took me a few months before I told anyone about my blog! Even when I told people, I wouldn’t give them the url. Now I tell everyone!! Once you start telling people it’s no big deal! I LOVE blogging, it’s sooo freaking fun.

Her Happy Balance February 11, 2013 at 9:51 pm

Right?! So freaking fun! Love those words! My coworkers and close friends know about it, I’m starting to branch out now with Facebook too. Still a little nervous though.

Jina February 11, 2013 at 10:00 pm

I haven’t told my parents either! It’s funny: I love sharing my blog with strangers, but it’s harder for me to share it with friends and family. I only recently started telling people I know in real life.

Jenny February 11, 2013 at 10:33 pm

I had never ever read a blog before I started blogging with Tina…. Infact I knew the term “blogger” but in my head it was just a “nerdy” thing! I am so glad that my perceptions were totally wrong! So far, best thing I decided to do! I agree, the constant learning is amazing!

hotspicyandskinny February 12, 2013 at 10:00 am

I agree that the learning curve is STEEP! I’m am learning so many new things about photography, blogging, coding that my brain feels like it’s on overdrive, in a very good way. I love it, it’s addicting!

Sarah February 26, 2013 at 10:15 pm

Fwafwafwa, thanks for the props lady! <3 glad I could help. If you need anything else just say the word!! πŸ˜€
