My Death Row Meal and Green Sauce Recipe

by Her Happy Balance on January 17, 2013

One of my favorite questions to ask someone when you’re doing an ice breaker interview at some awkward work/school/group event is “What would be your death row meal?” Over the years I’ve heard some seriously odd answers too. Really, you like that?! You like it THAT much?! If you’re interested in what some famous criminals asked for for their last meal, you can check that out here. I think if someone asked me what I wanted it would probably be classified in the odd category too. Well, this weekend past, my mother had a family dinner and she made one of my all time favorites: corned beef and cabbage. Wait, she said her favorite meal involves cabbage? Are you serious?! Why yes, bloggers, yes I am very serious, I don’t joke about fantastic food.

Traditionally, this is an Irish meal, and I can say that I have just the tiniest splash of Irish in my blood. Teeny tiny. And my mother, the wonderful chef, has none. But let me tell you what, she can cook with the best of the O’Malleys and McSheas. Here’s what my favorite meal looks like:

corned beef dinner

1-cabbage wedge, 2– carrots, 3– half a potato, 4– mouthwatering, bring you to your knees and praise God corned beef, 5– horseradish cream sauce, and 6-green sauce!

My mom cooks the corned beef in a big pot full of beer Β and spices. She lets it simmer for hours until the meat is pull apart with your fork tender, yum! And all the veggies get cooked in the pot, absorbing all the yummy, spice-filled goodness. But what really makes this meal, is the sauce. The horseradish cream is fantastic. But, the key is the green sauce, hands down. I feel like I’m sharing a deep dark family secret with you all, and so I advise you to take good notes, but I reveal to you her green sauce receipe:

Green Sauce:

1/4 cup finely minced fresh parsley

1/4 cup chopped yellow onion

6 green onions, chopped

1 clove of garlic, crushed

2 tbsp. white wine vinegar

2 tbsp. olive oil

1/4 tsp. dried oregano

1/4 tsp. dried rosemary

salt and pepper to taste

Combine all of the ingredients and mix well! The sauce tastes best if you let it marinate for a little while before serving. And usually we double the recipes because everyone likes to load up on it πŸ™‚

I’ve been trying to think of other ways you can use the sauce, and I was thinking you could combine it with greek yogurt to make a veggie dip or use it as a marinade for chicken. If you make it and get creative with it, let me know how you used it!

Thoughts??

What would be your “death row” meal?

What food that other people think is weird do you absolutely love?

This is one of my favorite meals!! Corned beef is to die for πŸ™‚

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:25 am

It totally is, and I usually only get it on St. Patty’s day! Tragic!

jessiebearwhat January 17, 2013 at 8:24 am

oooh, YUM. My grandma always used to say “ack, everyone’s Irish” when people would say they’re only a small percentage, or not Irish. haha

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Haha LOVE the way your grandmother thinks! πŸ˜‰

Honestly..all I want is chocolate..lots of white and milk chocolate. Is chocolate a meal?!

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:26 am

Definitely πŸ˜‰ Hershey Cookies and Cream Bars are my fav!

I’ve never had corned beef! Your post makes it look very appetizing though.
Goodness if I had to pick a meal I’d go with warm garlic bread, a huge salad, lasagna and then Cheesecake factory cheesecake after.

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:27 am

I’m starting to regret that I did a food post, because I’m sitting at my desk chomping at the bit to get to lunch! Your meal sounds delicious, you cannot go wrong with cheesecake! πŸ™‚

The Classy Bee January 17, 2013 at 9:10 am

I too adore cabbage, with tons of salt of course πŸ˜‰ My death row meal would have to be my moms homemade mac and cheese with my grandmothers meatballs. I’m hungry just thinking about it. lol

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:27 am

Mmm mac and cheese! I need some of that in my life ASAP. Is your grandmother Italian? Please say yes. Jealous!

The Classy Bee January 17, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Yes super Italian….hence the yummy food

Very strong sedatives and painkillers, washed down with palatable alcohol, like a fruity cocktail.

At this point, I wouldn’t care about food. I would just want to numb the pain of the dying process.

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:28 am

Yikes! Well I like the fruity cocktail idea πŸ™‚ Maybe a cosmo would be a nice addition!

ArunaAdvaney January 17, 2013 at 12:49 pm

Forget the fruit. Chocolate Martinis would be perfect. As many as it takes to knock me out. That just occurred to me when I saw the chocolate comment.

Definitely an interesting death row meal. I have to say mine would be mac and cheese and a milkshake. Oh and green beans and some chocolate cake. Oh god it’s a good thing I run so much…

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:29 am

I hear ya girly! I pretty much workout hard to be able to enjoy all my favorites πŸ™‚ I like the milkshake idea!

this is so funny because I never really eat red meat or meat in general BUT I adore when my mom makes a very lean corned beef just baked with cabbage, carrots and onions It is like the best meal ever. however, my death roll meal – steamed lobster. hands down. new englander at heart

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:31 am

Corned beef is just so good it’s hard to resist! Steamed lobster would be an awesome treat right now, maybe with a veggie medley and steak fries on the side…

carlyjg January 17, 2013 at 10:46 am

That meat look fab! My death row meal would probably be… A plain old grilled cheese, super thin fries, and a milkshake. Verrrry refined palate, huh?

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 11:32 am

I like the way you think! An American classic πŸ™‚

Haha well hey at least it’s healthy! My meal would be my favorite meal that my mom makes- Asian grilled salmon, cous cous, and broccoli with Parmesan. Yum!

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 10:02 pm

Yum, salmon! I was recently on a serious salmon kick. Moms cooking is always the best!

moderngirlnutrition January 17, 2013 at 7:40 pm

Picky Nicky January 17, 2013 at 9:36 pm

People find it weird that I love canned oysters and sardines
My dad used to snack on them with me and my sister when we were younger so we got used to the taste. They’re actually super healthy too πŸ™‚

Her Happy Balance January 17, 2013 at 10:00 pm

Hmm I’ve never tried them, I like fresh oysters so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Plus you have good memories attached to them πŸ™‚
