New things – A Website Find and a Cooking First

by Her Happy Balance on August 6, 2013

I do not know what has gotten into me lately, but I think I have been bitten with the fashion bug! I just cannot satisfy my need for new clothing and accessories. And believe me, I do not have a budget to just buy, buy, buy. That’s why I have been hitting up Etsy and the outlets to try and tame the beast in me that wants to shop their brains out without breaking the bank. I was really excited to go to the J. Crew outlet because I had my mind set on purchasing a few statement necklaces. Well, that just did not happen. When I looked at the price tags for the jewelry, each necklace was upwards of $50. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the quality was great, but I am not going to spend $70 on an orange bauble costume jewelry necklace. And that was the outlet price! Ain’t gonna happen. But my quest for statement jewelry was not stifled, and lucky for me, I found a much more affordable option in the form of the website Brina Box.

Brina box

I stumbled upon the website by reading a few fashion blogs and seeing that many times the accessories that the bloggers were rockin’ in their “OOTD” came from Brina Box. I quickly scoured the site and filled up my cart with pieces I needed to have. The website offers a lot of J.Crew inspired pieces without the J.Crew price tag…sold. Most of the items cost around $15 to $30 each. Here are the necklaces I purchased:

Brina Box jewelry

I am in LOVE with the pieces. I’ve worn the coral necklace pretty much nonstop since I’ve received it. And have big plans for the blue necklace in the future. Right now the site is doing a “grab bag” deal where you spend $35 and get $80 worth of jewelry. The catch of course is that you don’t know which pieces you will get. I’m just going to say right now that I am having a really difficult time not splurging on this right this moment. I wouldn’t be completely surprised if this mixed bag deal ended up in my future Friday favorites. Well, I’m glad I got that off my chest!

Another new thing in my life is winter squash. In the CSA last week, I received a pretty big pumpkin-looking squash. What the heck was I going to do with it? Roast it, of course! Got a new veggie and you don’t know how to use it? The answer is always to roast it. You just can’t go wrong.

Sweet & Salty Roasted Winter Squash:
1 medium-sized winter swuash (for lack of a better comparison…it’s about the size of a human head)
1/3 cup melted coconut oil
1 tsp Kosher salt
1/4 cup brown sugar
Sprinkle of cinnamon

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Carefully cut the squash in half and remove all the seeds with a spoon. Cut the squash into half inch wide slices. Line a baking tray with tin foil, and place your slices of squash onto the pan in a single layer. Drizzle your coconut oil over each of the slices. Sprinkle with the salt and cinnamon. Roast the squash for 15 minutes, then remove from the oven, flip the slices over and cover them in more cinnamon and put back in the oven for an additional 15 minutes. When 3 minutes remains on your oven timer, remove the squash, sprinkle the brown sugar on top of each slice and put the tray back into the oven for the remaining time. This will allow the brown sugar to caramelize. Remove squash, let cool, and serve!

Sweet & Salty Winter Squash

This ended up being delicious straight out of the oven as a snack; and I saved a bunch of slices to heat up as a side for dinner the next night. I find it funny that I tried winter squash during the summer for the first time, and it tasted liked fall 🙂 I’d say it tasted like a cross between pumpkin and kabocha squash.

Where do you buy your fashion accessories from?

Have you ever tried or cooked with winter squash?

FTC: I received a discount from Brina Box for sharing my purchases on the blog.

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:34 am

Thank you, Holly! I’m pretty much addicted to Brina Box and check it every day for sales and new pieces, it is just so easy to want to buy everything they sell!

Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear? August 6, 2013 at 9:13 am

Love the jewelry!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:31 am

Thanks, girlfriend! 😉

Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness August 6, 2013 at 9:18 am

That jewelry is so pretty!! (random fact about me- i can never spell jewelry right on the first try, i always spell it jewelery until spell check takes over, and censors my spelling for the sake of everybody else) i should try that site- i’ve been on a strict ‘no buying sh*t’ plan since May when I essentially got a whole new summer wardrobe for NO reason. i need to stay strong til fall… but its so hard 🙂

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:33 am

I love random facts! I can never ever spell guarantee right! And I hear you about the not buying anything plan…but sometimes entire new wardrobes on a whim are just totally necessary 😉

Beth Sheridan @sugarcoatedsheridans August 6, 2013 at 9:33 am

LOVE the coral necklace!!!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:31 am

Thank you , Beth! 🙂 Sometimes I get my act together and wear something besides gym clothing haha!

kathy @ vodka and soda August 6, 2013 at 9:38 am

i LOVE stella and dot jewelry but their prices are so dang expensive (i often lurk their Sale page but sometimes i come back empty handed) soooo…i see what i like at S&D and then head to Forever21 to look for similar pieces! you can’t beat F21 prices!!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:46 am

Stella and Dot DO have some great jewelry pieces. I may have to try and browse their sales page today, in fact. And I like F21 too. It’s a great way to buy the current trends without spending very much. That being said, some of my pieces from there haven’t always lasted too long :-/

Chelsea @ LittleOneRuns August 6, 2013 at 10:22 am

I usually go to Forever21 and buy them. Or anywhere else I find them with a good price tag. Love that necklace btw!! So cute. I might have to think about that deal they’re doing 😉 I never thought about that, but seriously, you can’t go wrong roasting a vegetable!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:47 am

The grab bag deal is so darn tempting! I need a bigger paycheck!

Caitlin August 6, 2013 at 10:56 am

Cute stuff girl! I wish I was girlier with stuff like that but with my limited budget right now, I have to be choosy and I would rather get new running clothes haha. I have been wanting to get new none running clothes though which is huge for me. I might go try to do some shopping this weekend since I get paid friday but we shall see 😛

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:48 am

I hear ya, limited budgets are no fun. I definitely should stop spending, but at least if you’re thrifty about it, you won’t feel as bad. Have fun doing normal clothes shopping 😀

Lauren August 6, 2013 at 11:04 am

I get most of my accessories at American Eagle, Express, or NY&Co. I’ll usually only get it if it’s at a good price or I have a coupon of some sort! I really, really love how bright the blue is on the necklace! CUTE!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:48 am

I have some pieces from NY&Co that I got in high school that I still love and wear! That cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors to wear, we’ll see how the necklace turns out 🙂

Christine@ Apple of My Eye August 6, 2013 at 11:21 am

LOVE that coral necklace! Statement necklaces are so perfect for dressing an outfit up :). I really need to check out that site- looks like such a great deal!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:49 am

Statement necklaces take a plain outfit and add some oomph to it, I think. It automatically makes you look trendy 🙂

Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl August 6, 2013 at 11:39 am

I LOVE that necklace on the right! I am super obsessed with all things royal blue, especially when it comes to fashion!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:50 am

ME TOO. They have that necklace in a bunch of different colors, but the cobalt blue just spoke to me! We could be matching royal blue twins ya know…

Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen August 6, 2013 at 11:54 am

Pretty statement necklaces. I want to try this trend out. Sounds like a great website!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:51 am

I feel like it takes a normal outfit that you wear all the time and kind of adds a little pizazz to it and reinvents the look. Super easy trend to try 🙂

Meghan @ fitnesscrEATures August 6, 2013 at 12:47 pm

Stop it.
Stop it right now or I’ll fly up there and make you.
I love how fashionable you are already and now you’re taking it to a whole new level with that gorgeous jewelry. I really like that you paired it with that bright coral shirt too. Seriously. I wish we lived closer so I could borrow all your shizzz. Now I can’t wait to see what big plans you have for the blue necklace! 🙂 I bet it’ll look absolutely amazing on your beautiful face!
Winter squash, eh? I have never heard of that before but it looks yummy! I’ve been scared to try squash my whole life and now that I’m getting into it, I’m really enjoying it.. This sounds delish and I love anything with brown sugar, and coconut oil probably makes it super yum.
I have zero fashion sense and therefore don’t have a place to buy accessories so I can’t answer that sucker of a question. I know a lot about work out clothes though! Well, no, not really even that, I mostly know I love Lululemon. So fail again.
Sigh. Glad you’re here to aid me in my lost fashion ways.

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:59 am

We could be like the Sisterhbood of the traveling pants…except less teeny bopper-y and more about sharing awesome clothing. But let’s be honest, I’m lazy and would probably take about a month to mail you clothing and by then it would be out of style. Okay, nix that idea. I’ll just send you awesome things for holidays 🙂

And the Winter squash was slightly intimidating as I was using this massive knife to essentially cut a pumpkin into slices, but it came out really well. It pretty much tasted like dessert, win 🙂

Bezzymates August 6, 2013 at 2:59 pm

Beautiful color. So summery and bright. At least you’re being a smart shopper.

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:52 am

I’m definitely trying to be a thrifty shopper. I wish my bank account could allow for haute couture, but this will do for now 😉

Jessie August 6, 2013 at 10:24 pm

I totally have a similar coral necklace & earring set… can we be twins? 🙂

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:52 am

Yes! We most certainly can be twins! 🙂 Coral is a great color, right?!

GiGi Eats Celebrities August 6, 2013 at 10:35 pm

Roasted Winter Squash is my LIFE! I just ate two HUGE butternut squashes yesterday! LOL!!!!!! And I eat spaghetti squash like I am the CEO of Winter Squash. LMFAO! Does that even make sense?

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:53 am

Haha! 🙂 Squash is so good, and it totally works in the summertime! I bet it would be really good on a grilled kabob with some zucchini!

Brittany August 6, 2013 at 11:56 pm

I’m not much of an accessory person, or really a fashion person at all haha. I do love the look of these pieces on you though!! Even more I love that squash! I WANT FALL!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:54 am

Haha, thank you, Brittany 😉 I am torn between wanting to hold onto summer a little longer, and diving head first into fall and all that it brings.

Meredith August 7, 2013 at 3:23 am

Gorgeous finds, girlie! You look beautiful! I totally agree that spending that amount on a necklace is ridiculous, I can not justify it either. I usually either hit up outlets or wait for a sale, but I’ve managed to find some relatively inexpensive pieces in Australia too. I am SO happy you shared this website!

As for winter squash, I tend to steam it and then mash it and top it with margarine/cinnamon/and brown sugar. Your concoction looks delish!

Her Happy Balance August 7, 2013 at 9:57 am

The outlets really are the way to go. Unfortunately, I think I tend to lean towards having expensive taste so raiding them every once and a while satisfies my NEED to shop my brains out. I would love to come to Australia and shop with you! 😉

Your version of Winter squash sounds amazing. Reminds me of Thanksgiving 🙂

Suzanne August 7, 2013 at 10:52 pm

The coral necklace is very pretty!
