Simple Tips to Make Your Workout “Green” & PRO Compression Giveaway Winner

by Her Happy Balance on April 23, 2013

Yesterday was Earth day.  Back in elementary school, they made a big deal out of that day by having us pick up trash on the playground or by having a big ceremony where they planted some new trees. As an adult, Earth day is not a cause for celebration in the workplace. No one brings in a giant cookie pizza with the recycling logo on it; and time isn’t set aside in the day to read stories about how Jimmy reduced his carbon footprint. The adult world is no fun. There, I said it! But, I’m sure you’ve noticed recycling containers in your workplace, when you go to the mall, and at movie theaters. Being “green” is definitely a big idea these days. Let’s take this earth friendliness a littler further and talk about a few ways you can keep your workout in the good graces of Mother Nature.

  1. Re-use Your Water Bottle. It’s fairly common knowledge that as humans, we use entirely too much plastic. Let’s try to lighten that plastic usage up a little bit by not buying those disposable bottles of water. Get a fancy pants water bottle with a filter in it, or a snazzy bottle with your favorite pictures on it. I, for one, like to use my Blender bottles as my water bottle at the gym.IMG_2292
  2. Bring Your Own Towel to the Gym. Instead of having to constantly rip off piece after piece of econo-brown paper towel at the gym to wipe off the equipment, why not bring your own towel? I have seen some very fun gym towels. To the girl who uses the zebra-striped towel, I have serious gym-towel envy. Yes, it’s a real condition.
  3. Do an Outdoor or At-Home Workout. I don’t know about you, but I hate driving. Now I have an excuse not to drive places I am lessening the harmful air pollutants that come from a car’s exhaust by staying home. Enter running, yoga, pilates, workout DVDs, free weights, etc. There are tons of ways to get a great workout  in without having to haul your butt to the gym to wait in line to use a machine.

When you have weather like this, you’ve got to take advantage of it!

  4. Recycle Your Gently Used Workout Gear and Shoes. When you start working out on a daily basis, you find that your workout wardrobe starts to outnumber your normal wardrobe. And working out can lead to some weightloss (thank, the lord!) So, that great top that used to fit you like a charm, may be getting a little too loose to wear to the gym. Instead of just tossing it, why not donate it to the Goodwill? And those running shoes that you no longer wear could get a second life with programs like Nike Reuse-A-Shoe nike
  5. Refuel with Whole Foods. Instead of munching on a pre-packaged protein bar, let’s save the earth from another plastic wrapper. Fruits are great for antioxidants, vitamins, and carbs. While cottage cheese/yogurt/nuts/beans are great sources of protein. Don’t get me wrong, I love my protein shakes, but it’s great to mix it up a little too!

There you have it ladies and gents, five simple ways to do a workout that helps save the polar bears/trees/ozone.

Great tips Leslee. I feel horrible, i didn’t even remember it was going on. I am giving myself the excuse that it’s not really celebrated over here in Kuwait, Ha Ha!

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:16 pm

Oh it’s alright, don’t feel bad 🙂 Not celebrating it in Kuwait is definitely an excuse!

meredith April 23, 2013 at 12:16 pm

I hardly recall Earth Day as a kid. And I have a great memory. I feel like they didn’t make that big of deal back then as they do now, maybe because I read and learn more about it today because of the internet?

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:18 pm

The internet definitely is a major reason for Earth day, I agree. With the ability to access massive amounts of information that wasn’t widely known before Earth day became a real thing 🙂 If you didn’t recall it from your school days, don’t worry. You weren’t missing too much haha

Jess April 23, 2013 at 12:26 pm

What an awesome post!! And you’re right the adult world is no fun. Totally wish someone would have brought a cookie like that into work! 🙂

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Someone should bring a big cookie cake into work for every holiday. National ladder day? Bring in a cake! haha

Meghan April 23, 2013 at 1:22 pm

I feel like maybe next year you should bring in a giant cookie pizza with a recycle sign on it and start a tradition in your office. I’ll do the same in Atlanta and maybe we can save Planet Earth!!! I hate driving too girl, maybe we can hire a chauffeur on my fakecation?? These are all fabulous ideas and I’ve seriously NEVER thought about bringing my own towel. How stupid of me. I’ll hop on board with you and say that pandas are the animals I would save. 🙂

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:22 pm

You made the right decision choosing pandas. They are ridiculously adorable and I aspire to meet one. 🙂 Also, a chauffeur will be a must on your fakecation. We’ll make said individual drive us everywhere while listening to our super loud singing to the radio. It will be a blast 🙂

Good green tips! I recycle 🙂 But really I should plant more or do something else. One of these days though I’ll get to it!

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Haha that’s what I say too! I recycle but that’s about the extent of my green-ness. I should take my own advice! I will, I promise 🙂

Caitlin April 23, 2013 at 7:50 pm

I definitely remember celebrating Earth Day as a kid…we mostly did the tree planting ceremony haha…you brought back a lot of memories with that one 😛 I have an aluminum water bottle that goes with me everywhere (Joe now teases me about it if I almost walk out the door without it), and I’m crazy about recycling (I yell…loudly…Joe learned not put anything recyclable in the trash quick and that I will try to reuse or donate whatever I don’t want anymore if possible…moving is a great way to learn such things :P).

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:24 pm

You are my “reuse, reduce, recycle” role model! 🙂 And aluminum water bottles are the way to go…then you don’t get that plastic-y taste from your plastic water bottle. I can dig it 🙂 I hope the moving adventure is going well, btw!

I definitley remember wearing t-shirts in honor of earth day up until about 7th grade. We tried to have a “green committee” at my last job where we educated employees on the benefits of saving paper, reusing water bottles, etc., but there were no parties or cookies involved. You’re right, the adult world is no fun!

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:25 pm

The adult world needs a major facelift in the fun department. And I am impressed that you even tried to start a “green committee” at your previous job. So eco-friendly 🙂

Sarah @ Feeeding the Brain and Body April 24, 2013 at 1:05 pm

I do definitely have a trusty water bottle that I fill up and reuse. In fact I have three: one I keep at work, one I keep at home, and one I keep for when I am going out for the day ect. These are all great tips, thanks for sharing! 🙂

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:26 pm

I like the way you think! I need to get a water bottle for my job, that would be SO handy! And you’re welcome. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

Lindsey April 24, 2013 at 2:25 pm

Hi! I just found your blog through fitnesscreatures blog. I love it! Right up my alley. I have lots of “old” running shoes that are just sitting in my closet collecting dust, I will definitely have to donate them. My water bottle I use now is a brita one (don’t know the exact name). I really want a camelbak one though!

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Hi Lindsey! So excited you stopped by 🙂 Meghan and Bek over at Fitnesscreatures are awesome, so happy you found me through them! The Reuse a shoe program is pretty awesome, I need to take my own advice and send some shoes over to them soon.

I use a Brita pitcher at home and love it. But I have Camelbak water bottle envy too. I love that you can clip your car keys to the handle of it when you work out at the gym.

Sabrina @ Nutritiously Sweet April 24, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Love this post! You bring a very good point. I actually lost my reusable bottle and was getting lazy and just reused bottles (which is BAD). But I just found it 🙂

Her Happy Balance April 24, 2013 at 8:45 pm

Thanks, Sabrina! 🙂 And you found your bottle (yay!) and that’s all that matters now. I hope you are having a lovely Wednesday!

Kristina April 25, 2013 at 4:33 am

Bring back the giant cookie! 🙂
I have “see the polar bears in their natural habitat” on my bucket list. If we don’t take care of our environment, that ones going to check itself off before I get to it. Hope not!
