The “Gumby” Leg Workout!

by Her Happy Balance on June 26, 2013

It is no secret that I love to hate leg day at the gym. It always leaves me sore to no end for the next day or two after – or in my most recent workout for three days after. Do you feel bad for me? Yeah, me neither. But leg day is really important! Your legs and trunk are your greatest area for muscle mass. The more muscle you build up, the more calories you burn and the less guilty you feel about opting for that second glass of vino 😉 Working on your leg strength can also help to better your overall posture. No slouching! So I figure I should share the workout that had me avoiding stairs and walking like Gumby, because who wouldn’t want to share in that experience?! You too can walk like Gumby with one killer workout.

So what the heck are crazy squats and crazy lunges?! Oh, I am so glad you asked! I have to give my boyfriend credit for coming up with these. They’re a modified version of an Insanity exercise. Except remember how Insanity requires no added weights or equipment? Well, the beefcake (boyfriend) decided to include the addition of weights to this exercise making it just that much harder. Thanks a lot, man friend! Not.

Crazy Squat: Holding a weight/medicine ball of your choosing, do 8 slow squats. On the 8th squat, hold the squating position for 30 seconds. When the 30 seconds expires, do 8 small bounce squats before returning to upright position and cursing your face off.

Crazy Lunge: Holding a weight/medicine ball of your choosing, do 8 slow lunges with one leg. On the 8th lunge, hold the lunge position for 30 seconds. When the 30 seconds expires, do 8 small bounce lunges before returning to upright position. Repeat with your other leg.

It’s helpful to do these with a partner, as they can hold the stop watch in your face so you know exactly when your 30 seconds is up. It sounds easy, it is not. In fact it literally (Chris Traeger style) makes a single second stretch out to an eternity. When I finish, my legs are all wobbly and unlike Weebles, this wobbler does fall down. Actually, I lean against a wall and support myself until my legs stop shaking.

There you have it, the workout that makes me want to die. If you’re interested in weight values for any of the exercises, I would be more than happy to tell you what I use. Also, if you’re unsure how to complete any of the exercises, I find this body building site very helpful. Happy Hump day!

What leg exercise has you walking like Gumby after a workout?

Do you try and isolate one muscle, say the quadriceps, or work your whole leg?

LMAO I totally love this. Leg day.. oh my is crazy. I’d have to say doing the Arc machine combined with squats, plie squats, side lunges and such definitly make me “gumbly.”

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:34 am

The arc trainer definitely gets your buns and thighs burning! 🙂

Chelsea @ LittleOneRuns June 26, 2013 at 10:44 am

Doing all my exercises back to back makes me barely able to stand when I’m done lol. I start with 10 squats with a 25lb weight held above my head, then onto the leg press where I do 25 toe raises then leg press 15x, then onto 20 lunges with the 25 lb weight above my head, and repeat! I feel ya’. I love to hate leg day 🙂

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:35 am

Yeah, it’s the continuous non-stop action that really makes me want to die too haha

Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom June 26, 2013 at 10:52 am

My legs get sore, but really only running or anything that affects my quads really bother me the following days. My hips get crazy tight after running long distances (aka longer than 10 miles), and my quads are always tight.

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:35 am

Girl, what I would give to be able to run 10 miles! That is just such an impressive feat to me 🙂

Sarah @ Sweet Miles June 26, 2013 at 11:13 am

I have hard time even making myself work out my legs after I’ve been running! I know I need to so it will improve my overall strength though! I’d say abb’s make me feel like Gumby the most! I don’t know what it is, but that feeling where when you laugh or cough it hurts is the worst!

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:36 am

Ugh, that is pretty bad. But it hurts so good! Gives new meaning to side-splitting laughter 🙂

Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear? June 26, 2013 at 11:56 am

hahaha omg leg day kills me. And that last pic is hilar!

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:37 am

🙂 glad you enjoyed it. Let day kills us all!

Christine@ Apple of My Eye June 26, 2013 at 1:05 pm

That workout sounds AWESOME! I’m always looking for new leg exercises since I often get stuck in a rut and repeat the same ones over and over again, so thank the beefcake for me for the crazy squats and lunges 😉

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:38 am

Hahaha I will definitely mention that a HHB reader wants to thank the beefcake 😉 That’ll make him happy, he is such a great gym motivator but sometimes I just want to tell him “No I’m not doing it!” and leave the gym haha

Leg workouts are some of my favorite. I hate them when I’m doing them, but love how I feel like I’m walking on air after. The next day is another story. I don’t even want to talk about two days after.

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:38 am

Right?! Day two after hurts just as much if not more! I was thinking that it was only me, glad you can commiserate with my pain haha

Alex @ therunwithin June 26, 2013 at 4:39 pm

we do these in body pump right now! killer!

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:39 am

Death. I’m fairly sure i am dying when I do them. At the very least I’m taking time off of my life haha

Beth Sheridan (Sugar Coated Sheridan) June 26, 2013 at 9:03 pm

Oh my goodness, I can see why you labeled both of those exercises CRAZY!! I am going to have to try those!

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:48 am

Beth, they seriously make me cringe even thinking about them. But that must mean they’re a good exercise then. Give ’em a try on a day when you feel very pumped haha

Bezzymates June 26, 2013 at 9:26 pm

Sounds like a killer leg workout, especially those crazy squats and lunges. Thanks for sharing.

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:48 am

You got it! Good luck with them, they kill me every time!

Meghan @ fitnesscrEATures June 26, 2013 at 10:49 pm

Ah! Now I want to watch Gumby. Jeez Louiseeeee.
Haha I LOVEEEEEEE leg workouts like crazy. That’s my favorite kind of workout because I think I have great legs, nice and strong! 🙂 Squats are my best friend. Lunges, however, can kiss my A.
I am scared of all the machines in a gym (and the gym in general) but I’m all about some leg work, especially if it leaves me feeling like an ambiguous clay figure.
<3 you tons bloggy besty and I hope you had fun tonight and I hope you blog like crazy about it!!! xoxoxoxooxoxoxoxooxoxoxoxo

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:52 am

Meghan, you are the Gumby to my Pokey 🙂 Squats and lunges are no where near being my best friends (Duh – because you already fill the position) but they definitely make for a good workout 🙂 Don’t be scared of the gym machines! They are harmless and just want to be your friend 🙂 And I had a BLAST and half last night…more on that to come, of course 😉 Have fun in your lamesauce training junk today, you can make it! The weekend is closing in on us!!! <33 And if you still feel crappy about it, just rememebr that you are my beautiful bloggy besty and all is right with the world.

Meredith June 27, 2013 at 1:34 am

Wow looks like a great leg workout for sure! I always despise squats while doing them but love the after feeling! Jumping squats are always a killer to me!

Her Happy Balance June 27, 2013 at 9:52 am

Ugh! Anything involving jumping makes me want to die inside a little haha CRINGE. They are so tough, you go girl!

Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen June 27, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Oh my goodness those crazy squats and lunges sound hard! I’ll have to give them a try on the much dreaded leg day! 🙂

Her Happy Balance June 28, 2013 at 10:18 am

If I can do them, you can do them! 🙂
